For the sixth year in a row, the Woodstock Blue Streaks captured the McHenry county girls' track title. McHenry finished fifth and Johnsburg iiroc c^vpnth "We shot for fourth, but got fifth," said Dan Boland, coach of the Warriors. "Under the weather con ditions, the girls ran extremely well." Cold and windy were the weather conditions. It was a determining factor individually, but shouldn't be taken as a excuse, according to Bill Hurckes, the Johnsburg coach. "It was a bad day. It was cold and windy, but we're not making any excuses." Woodstock captured the title by out scoring Cary-Grove 130-109. Crystal Lake South was third with 103, Jacobs 471/2, McHenry 40, Crystal Lake Central 37, Johnsburg 14, Harvard 4 and Alden-Hebron 3Vfc. What hurt the Warriors, according to Boland, was a couple of' his girls missed the meet because of other commitments. "We have a small team and we need everybody. If we have everybody, we will be representable. If the other girls would have been here, we would have taken fourth." Delia Saunders and Vickie Senn were the top performers for Boland. Saunders was the Warriors only county champ, capturing the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:38.06. Saunders also placed fourth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:38.4. Senn missed out from being the county champ in the long jump by two inches. Michele Zimmerman of Crystal Lake South, edged her out 14- 10 to 14-8. The long jumpers had a difficult time, jumping into the wind. "Good individual performances. The kids are coming along," said Boland on Senn and Saunders. "Delia Saunders did an excellent job. Missy Christie was the top per former for Johnsburg, placing second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:32.62. The Skyhawks also garnered a fourth and a sixth from Bev Hiller in the 100 meter dash and the 1600. Hiller was timed at 13.84 in the 100 and 5:59.60 in the 1600. The seventh place was about where Hurckes thought his team could place. "I thought we would do better in the field events, but we didn't. I thought going against schools twice our size, we were very competitive." Johnsburg failed to have anybody place in the field events. The Warriors were able to gain a couple fourths also. Pam Bradley was fourth in the 3200 meter run at 13:04.66 and Kelly Sue Thomas was fourth in the shot put at 28-4Vfe. Boland traveled with his girls squad to Woodstock and watched his team grab a second place in a triangular with the Blue Steaks and Marian Central. Not only did Boland watch his girls, but ran from one end of the Woodstock track and field area to the other end, shouting out support and coaching advice. Being the only McHenry coach at the meet, Boland could be seen telling his high jumper to tuck her chin while going over the bar, and at the same keeping time of of the mile run with his stop clock. "I try to get around to see as many of the girls as I can," said Boland. "I think its important; especially -with the young kids. The seniors know more what to do." Even with all the coaching, the Warriors were unable to top the 1983 McHenry County champs. Woodstock totaled 79 points, McHenry 45 and Marian 40. The Warriors were able to collect four firsts. Delia Saunders continued her track success with firsts in the 800 meter run and 1600 meter run. She was timed at 2:36.18 in the 800 and 5:43.44 in the 1600. The first Boland was the most pleased with was from the 800 meter relay. Boland said its winning time of 1:55.87 is only five seconds off the state qualifying time. Members of that team are; Debbie Freund, Vickie Senn, Diane Kennedy and Laura Thome. Kelly Sue Thomas took a first in the shot put for the Warriors with a heave of 90 feet. Marian Central coach, Sheryl Hume, was hoping to edge out the Warriors. "At the Jacobs meet, McHenry only beat us by three points. We were hoping to do better this time. "We did some experimenting. I'm real happy with the mile relay." The 1600 meter relay team finished first with a time of 4:36.18. Lori Piccolo also took a first for Marian in the high jump. She leaped at 4-8. The Warriors were helped in edging Marian, by gaining a couple seconds to go along with the firsts. Pam Bradley was second in the 3200 meter run with a time of 13:08.4 and the 800 meter medlay relay was second with a time of 2:03.09. Freund, Angela An derson, Tracy Brechel and Terri Blume are members of that team. Freund also took a second in the shot put with a throw of 27-9%. Teammate Kelly Sue Thomas was right behind her at 27-%. bsnoliq iginS .noeeoa Softball Marathon At Petersen Park The fourth annual Easter Seal softball marathon will be played in Petersen Park in McHenry Sunday, May 21-22 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Officially sanctioned park depart ment teams, teams from business, clubs and organizations can register to play a 12-inning (two hour), 12 or 16- inch, slow or fast pitch game. STAFF PHOTOS -- MIKE LAMB MCC Lose Three Baseball Games To Open Weekend After having 20 games called off do to weather, the McHenry County College baseball team finally squeezed in three games over the weekend. The Fighting Scots took on conference rivals Waubonsee and Morton. On Saturday, Waubonsee jumped off to a two run lead in the second inning off of starter Dave Smith. The Scots tied the score at two on a single by Mike Sheperd in the fourth. In the fifth, MCC took a 5-2 lead, but Waubonsee responded with four runs in the sixth inning to win 6-5. Sunday, the Scots jumped to a early lead against Morton. Smith singled in a run after Scott Fields tripled and Joe Mack walked. Morton scored three runs in the fourth, but the Scots came back with a run to tie the score at 3-3. Morton went on to score three > more runs in the sixth and took a 6-3 win. In the second game, MCC pounded out 15 hits and came from behind for an 8-8 tie. Two balks, four errors, and some mental errors allowed Morton to jump to a 5-0 lead. Scott Fields came in relief of Bob Rower in the first and shut the door on Morton. MCC came back with four of its own in the bottom half of the first. MCC tied the score at seven in the sixth and in the seventh Morton scored taking on a one run lead. The game was called because of darkness. "Our pitching was not that bad and we got the hits when we needed them," said Bill Otley, coach of MCC. This was only our fifth game and the teams we are playing have had at least 15 or 20 games already." The Scots next game is Saturday against Wright College and they play Niles College on Sunday.
