Lightning kills a number of people each year and most of them in late spring or early s u m m e r . D a n g e r o u s locations are under big trees, in a bathtub, or around siz able metal objects. An all- metal automobile or an all- metal airplane are safe places to be. Lightning is caused by up and down drafts in thunder- heads, which change the electrical composition of the air, building up cloud areas of positive or negative charge. Such a cloud, coming near an oppositely-charged object, exchanges electrical charges with it. . If you observe active lightning in the west, it will probably be where you are soon, but seeing it in the east usually means it will not come your way. The old rule for judging the distance of lightning by counting the seconds is valid. If you see the flash, count the seconds until you hear thunder. Divide the seconds by five (sound travels a fifth of a mile a second). Your answer is the distance the lightning is from yoii^ia. miles. ft l: PARKING LOT SALE. APRIL 30 - MAY 1 FREE GIFT.
