In fact, there shouldn't be any doubt in anybody's mind. Not when you take into consideration Wright was the mile champion at The Kane land Invitational last Saturday. A total of 32 teams from all over the state participated in the meet. |wright, only a junior, over took all the milers vrom those schools with a time of 4:33.2. We competed against 32 schools with 15 or i pretty good milk's. It was a prettj Jwin," said Boland. "For him, pschologict •shows him he can run with them.'r =16 lyit • Wright is happy with the win at Kaneland, ;but he has something more important to him on .his mind. "I'm hoping to run the state ^qualifying time which is 4:25. If it wasn't for the windy conditions, I would have been pretty close." .f Wright also has his sights set on breaking the [record in the mile. ; At the same time, Wright is preparing to do battle in the conference. Wright calls the Fox Athlete Of The Week Valley Conference real tough in the distance events. Two particular milers in the FVC are' going to be extremely tough to over come. He - says Frank Lane and Paul McDaniel of Crystal Lake Central are running the same times as he has been. McDaniels placed 10th at the state meet in the mile Wright wDTTace the Central challenge at the Fox Valley Conference meet at McHenry May 13. Boland feels Wright is ready for the upcoming challenges. "I personally feel he is a little bit ahead where he should be," said Boland. "Because Brian has worked very hard this year. He kinda pushed himself a little more than we anticipated. "I think he has a chance. He worked hard. I think it will be an excellent mile in a couple weeks. It will be a good mile to watch. Yea, I think he has a chance to win." Wright wants to work on picking up the pace and get a better kick at the end in preparation for the upcoming events. ' s And for Boland, well, having a Brian Wright <xi his track team is just a blessing every coach dreams about having. "It's nice to have him coming back one more year. I'm happy to see the progress he has made as a junior." The McHenry Plaindealer 6ports Pinkstaff Shuts Out Crown For Warriors Sixth Straight DICKRABBITT Cissy Pinkstaff's three hit shut out pitching enabled the Lady Warriors to win their sixth game in a row and the third in Fox Valley Conference play. The Warriors defeated the Crown Vikings 10-0. The Warriors now have a 6-0 overall record. Pinkstaff struck out five and walked one. She was never in serious trouble throughout the game. The Warriors scored their first run in the second inning, when Andee Norton singled and went to second on an error. Johnson sacrificied her to third. Norton scored on Sara Prust's hit to center. In the third, the Warriors doited the plate three more times. Mezzano singled, stole second, and scored on an Water Warriors Gain State Points With Glenbrook Win error that enabled Prust to reach first base. Pinkstaff doubled, scoring Prust and then Pinkstaff scored on a pass ball. In the fourth, the Warriors hit paydirt five more times. Keevil and Mezzano both walked. Prust singled scoring both runs, Karpavicius singled scoring Prust and Norton's hit scored Karpavicius. the Warriors failed to score in the fifth, but in the sixth they put the game away. Karpavicius singled and stole second. Norton walked, Michelle Kennedy advanced both runners with a nifty bunt and then Greta Larsen's long fly to center enabled Karpavicius to score the winning run. The Warriors had 12 hits and committed only two errors in the game. .grounder- tO Jiecond. Dave Knudson followed with an infield single plating Beaman and sending Fields to third. Knudson then stole second and the throw went into center fi||d allowing Fields to touch home. After Greg Bradshaw lined out to center, George Birdsell lifted a sacrifice fly scoring Knudson. Birdsell, who took the loss on the mound for Woodstock, threw just four pitches in the second inning and got another run added to his lead in the WHS half of the frame. Jeff Harris led off the inning with a single to center and scampered all the way home when the ball got by Bauml. Slowly but surely the Warriors nipped at the lead as, in their half of the third, Bauml smacked a one-out single and stole second. Vehring followed with a one-bagger to right cutting the lead to 4-2. The WHS ad vantage was down to one when Podpora dropped a single into left and an error on the play allowed Vehring to race home. McHenry took the lead in the fourth as Moore reached on an error, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Chris Teuber's one-out single. With two out, Bauml reached on another error allowing Teuber to score and it was 5-4 Warriors. A pair of walks, a double steal and a ground out allowed the Blue Streaks to knot the score at five after the WHS fourth. In the decisive seventh inning, Podpora reached on a fielder's choice and Aim advanced him to second with a swinging bunt. Dunne and Moore slapped back-to-back singles socring Podpora and Aim giving McHenry a 7- 5 advantage. After Pat Cameron walked to load the bases, the Warriors tried a suicide squeeze bunt which failed, but advanced runners to second and third. Teuber then added insurance with a two-run double creating the final margin of victory. "We didn't play well the whole day," WHS Coach Ed Brucker said. "We needed to beat them yesterday after beating them on Monday. I wasn't sure they (the Blue Streaks) were ready. I guess we'll have to pick up the pieces the rest of the way." WHS is now 2-2 in conference action. The Streaks face Harvard today and travel to Cary-Grove for a twin-bill Saturday. The Crown Viking base runner is a dead duck as McHenry Warrior Karen Karpavicius receives the ball for the out at third base. The Warriors shut out Crown 10-0. STAFF PHOTO -- WAYNE GAYLORD Warriors Bury Streaks With Seventh Inning Rally widia WOODSTOCK - The McHenry wdh-idW came up vffth four runs in the seventh inning and Pat Dunne pitched one-hit ball for the final five frames as McHenry stopped the Blue Streaks, 9-5, in a Fox Valley Con ference game at City Park Wed nesday. The Warrior win avenges a 9-4 loss dealt by Woodstock Monday an McHenry's home field. Woodstock jumped to a 4-1 lead after two innings, but the guests added two tallies in the third and another in the fourth to tie the score. WHS' final run came in the bottom of the fourth before McHenry exploded in its last at bat. Tim Pankiewicz led the game off with a single and went to second when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Mike Bauml's bunt single then put runners at the corners with nobody out. Ross Vehring the bounced to the pitcher who threw him out at first. Pankiewicz tried to score on the play, but was gunned down at the plate. After Mike Podpora walked, Steve Aim doubled to right scoring Bauml. The Blue Streaks came back with three in their half of the first frame with the aid of two McHenry errors. Bill Beaman drew a leadoff walk and went to third when Podpora threw wildly to first on Gregg Fields With the state water polo tourney coming up next Thursday, the McHenry Warriors won what could be their biggest game of the season. The Water Warriors defeated Glenbrook 8- 7. The win over Glenbrook is big for two reasons. One, the Warriors lost to St. Viator 14-6 Tuesday. And two, Glenbrook was in the final eight at last year's state tourney. State tourney qualification is based on a point system of who teams beat and lose to. Glenbrook was worth three points, because they were in the top eight last season. The Warriors had their final game Thursday at St. Patricks. With a record of 8-3, the Warriors might need a win over St. Patricks to gain a tourney spot. The Warriors used a tough trapping defense in their win over Glenbrook. "We played the best defense we have all year," said Mike Shanahsre, the Warrior coach: "We used a sluff defense, which is like a trapping defense in basetball. It really stifled them" Glenbrook was so stifled, the Warriors shut them out in the first period. Before Glenbrook knew what hit them, the Warriors had grabbed a 4-0 lead. Bob Schaffer and Rich Miller scored two goals each. But, the second period was Glen- brook's turn to shut out the Warriors. McHenry JV Tennis Team 4th The McHenry junior varsity tennis team took a fourth place at a in vitational at West Campus last Saturday. The McHenry doubles team of Gary Strom and Randy Weidemann were the top finsihers for the Warriors. They advanced to the semi-finals before losing to the Lake Zurich team. The other McHenry team, Tom Wynveen and Mike Bellich were beaten in the second round by the Schaumburg team. Mark Davidson was the only Warrior singles player to advance pass the first round. However, Glenbrook only scored two goals, and the Warriors went into half time with a 4-2 lead. The Warriors were able to get their scoring act together in the third period, scoring three goals to Glen- brook's two. Schaffer, Brad Shaver and Darren Cepulis scored the goals for the Warriors. The fourth period was Glenbrook's. After a Glenbrook goal, Schaffer followed with one of his won to make the score 8-5. But, Glenbrook came right back with two straight goals to close the gap to 8-7 with 3:10 left in the game. The Warrior defense came through, however, and held the 8-7 lead until time ran out. According to Shanahan, there isn't much that can be done in holing a slim lead with three minutes left in a game. "There is a 35 second clock and there is a rule against st Shanahan. "The basicthing turn the ball over. If you take a shot, make sure it goes out of the pool or it goes in." Although a small offensive output by the Warriors, shanahan 'was pleased with the effort. "We only took 17 shots, but we scored on half of them. We played a slow-down offense and slowed down the tempo on a lot faster team. Sometimes a team can take 30 or JO^shots. * McHenry Relays One Of The Best Tonight is the annual McHenry Relays, one of the best track meets in this part of the state Athletic Director Joe Schlender and head coach Dan Boland have put in a lot of work in preparation for this event. The field events, with exception of the pole vault, each have three contestants. Their combined totals determine the winner of each event There are shuttle hurdle relays, numerous other relays and individual events such as to the 100 and 200 meters. A total of 12 teams are entered this year. Several years ago, 18 schools competed. But with the money situation, some schools are not traveling as much as in past years. Schools entered are Belvidere, Buffalo Grove, Crown, Dundee, Elk Grove, Hoffman Estates, Kaneland, Lake Forest, Lake Park, Schaumburg, Woodstock, and of course the Warriors. Gone and surley missed, will be St. Charles. The Saints always put on a good show for the fans, but the competition still will be tough. Field events will get underway at 3:30 p.m. and the running events at 5 p.m. The last running event is scheduled for 9:35 p.m., but you can bet you will be on your way home before that. With the organization of the local officials, they run on time or ahead of time. If you are interested in a well run, well organized track meet, I suggest you head for McCracken Field tonight. You won't be disappointed. The Warrior thinclads had a thriller on Monday night at Jacobs. Trailing with three events to go, the Warriors finished one, two, On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt three in the 1600 meter run. The Warriors were led by sophomore Chris Creutz in the time of 4:42. Then, in probably a fine a race as you would ever want to see, Mladen Rudman of the Warriors and George Scott of Crown ran stop for step in the 200 meter dash, with Rudman getting the nod at the tape. These victories ive the Warriors a close win over Crown. The jst Golden Eagles finished just behind in third place. Pat Wirtz's Lady Warriors are rolling along with six straight wins this season. Three of them in the Fox Valley Conference. With mostly underclassmen, the Warriors have what it takes--good pitching, good defense and good hitting. I have seen them twice this season, and I have been impressed both times. Brian Wilson s Warrior baseball team has fallen on hard times. They lost to Woodstock 9- 4. They will play the Blue Streaks again Wednesday ana host Dundee tomorrow, The Cards of Jerry Cartright is my pick to win the FVC title again this year. Maybe with this warm weather, the Warriors will snap out of their slump and start Masting the baseball. Gary Gray's tennis team into a "buzz saw" on Tuesday when they hosted the powerful Gators of Crystal Lake South. The Gators won easily 5-0. The Gators are defending conference champions and from the looks of things, should Bieat again this year. t has been nice of Sport's Editor Mike Lamb this week.
