They have to think about how 'they are going to hit that next shot so they are successful. A slip in concentration could bring disaster. Although the amateur golfer isn't golfing for .huge amounts of mosey, he does want to see improvement in ms or her score. According to Don Habjan, die professional at McHenry Country Club, go|f course strategy and management is a very important and vital part In one's success on the golf course. Importance of strategy and management "Through using proper Rolf course management a golfer can drastically improve ni§ scoring capabilities," says Habjan. "Mqst of the pl&yers who play the game only look to improve their swing mechanics. That's something some' people really dwell on too much -- the mechanics of the game and not the thought process that goes into it to decrease their scores. "They always think about how they can hit the golf ball better to get into theiiole faster, instead of thinking it into the hole a little better. Proper thinking is the best way to improve your game." Habjan says an example of thinking your way to a lower score is knowing what kind of club to use when chipping on to the green. "Normally you should always use a more lofted dub when chipping downhill. That will insure you of getting the ball to slowdown on the pitch of the hill. On the other end of it, if you'fe chipping up an incline to the flag, you need less loft to insure the ball will get to the flag instead of hitting into the angle or pitch of the green and slowing up. "Again with the ad vent of lofted fairway woods and seven- woods and utility woods on the market now, it's a lot easier for an amateur golfer to hit out of a long rough with a seven- wood or the more lofted utility woods. "As far as slanted lies, you should always take into consideration if you have an uphill lie, the ball will naturally |T needless lc if your on a level lie. And it's the exact opposite if yc a downhill lie. The ball is going to go lower ana you need more loft to get the ball in the air. "Therefore, a four-iron would act somewhat like a three- iron. M "If the ball is above your feet, you are naturally going to hit the ball to the left, so you are naturally going to nave to aim a little further right. "Again, it's opposite if the ball is below your feet. The ball is going to work awaj ' farther left. Rememl the direction of the slant of the hill. into it if you: • Besides wind into consideration. S . tii» w5 nyy to The annual derbty. is spbrtsdfedb^p the McHenry High School Teachers Association/ the McHenry Police Officers Association, the East Campus Student Council and the High School Board of Education. It provides a fishing trip, boat rentals and prizes at no cost to student par ticipants. According to Robert Doran, organizer of the event, "The derby has become a terrific annual event. The support by local teachers, police officers, students and parents has exceeded all expectations. It is too bad the weather and the fish couldn't cooperate as well." \ However, some fish were caughtj Receiving first place for the most total fish caught was the team of Tom Carl (East Campus administrator) shot should He suggests to use. weather is people don't realize in cold weather, is use a golf bail with a lower compression, because in cold weather it's hard to compress a 100 compression ball or an 80 compression. A lady s ball would be better to maximize your distance in cold frigid weather.'*" "Besides the equipment and conditions, there is the shot itself that has to be planned out by the golfer. "You should always treat each shot with the utmost of care. If it's a two- footer to win a national open, before you step up to hit a shot, plan it out, before you are going to hit the shot long before you execute it. "The worst thing you could possibly do is stand over a ball and start to think about how you are going to hit it. For those people who walk, when you go up to the ball, you should be visualizing how you are goiitf to hit the shot long before you get to it. T "Even if you are riding in a cart, don't start to gab with your playing partner or opponent. Think about your shot long before you have to execute it. And that's a way to speed up play." After you have figured out your shot selection, hitting the ball in the right direction is awfully important too, adds Habjan. "Most important is to aim the club at the target and then address it correctly. Those are two key items that you can do when you stand up and approach the golf shot. You have to have the best address possible to aiming the golf club. "A wise idea before each round, to get a better mental thought and feeling how you are going to anticipate the rouna is to go to the driving range and hit a few shots. If you do that, you are going to get a better feel for how the golf club is going to react in your hands and every day, people's feel changes. "By hitting a few golf balls, you can identify with a particular swing thought for that given day. If a ball is going left to right, or right to left, go on the golf course and [day it that way. Don't try to go through air correction on the golf course. You will always play it better if you have decided in advance what your one swing key will be for that day. "Don't go out their with a multitude of thoughts. Keep it very plain and simple and then try to think around the golf course." Realizing your Limitations No matter if you are average Joe golfer or the hottest golfer on the men's or women's professional golfing tour -- everybody has limitations. Habjan says it will be beneficial if you know what they are. "If I was to have somebody hit a four-iron 150 yards, and he was a elderly gentleman or woman, there would be no conceivable way he could do it. So he has to find a different way to hit it. Obviously it means more club. "The more you know about your limitations, the easier it comes in knowing when to charge and when to retreat. Most golfers that play today, who are reallv weekend golfers, never know when to retreat. They always want that * excitement of hitting that one particular shot. "By doing that, most shots are doomed to fail beforethey - 1 are attempted. You have to learn to play safe shots within ; vmii; what vou can do on coif course. «» lua i cul l ies uuuugi i guvm piovutc , gwu uiuugi t ta e t i iu owL g good instruction. '«» '« "A lot of the safety shots you play out there, they may not * seem that spectacular, but will only lose one stroke instead } of risking disaster. Negative attitudes is another common sin of golferss. * Habjan says maintaining a positive attitude is very important to the golfer. "Avoid all negative thoughts. The game is tough enough without thinking you can't do it. And if you think you can't ° do it, obviously you haven't given enough thought or practice into that kind of shot making. Please go and get advice from a golf professional or instructor or anyone who knows how to hit that shot. "You can experiment on your own at the range to have the kind of capabilities to hit that kind of golf shot, so you will know in advance on the golf course if you can really make the shot or will never make the shot. "Remember you are dealing with percentages and you have to beat the percentages all the time. You don't want ar 50-50 chance. You wantyit on your side. If you feel you have a 75 or 80 percent chance of hitting that shot, that would be a fairly good chance. If it's less than that, go for a definite safety shot." Hainan says you will get the most enjoyment out of the game by giving your best effort when you get into trouble and succeeding as a result. In conclusion, Habjan repeated a quote made by Arnold Palmer. -ft "Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated. A child can play it well, and a grown man can never master it. Any single round of it is full of unexpected triumphs and - seemingly perfect shots that can end in disaster. It is almost a science, yet it is a puzzle without an answer. It is gratifying and tantalizing, precise and unpredictable; it requires complete concentration and total relaxation. It satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening -- and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind ever invented." ady Skyhawks Break Records At Invite Johnsburg finish In McHenry High Derby and Bill Brown (West Campus student). Places At Lake Forest Relays LAKE FOREST - The McHenry Warrior girls' track team was able to place in two events during the Lake Fores Relays last Saturday. ^ The discus and four-mile relay teams both turned in sixth places. No official team placing, point total or times was available at the present time. The discus team was made up of Kelly Sue Thomas, Debbie Kennedy and pam Bradley. Kelly Brought Delia Saunders, Pam Bradley and Donna Deveneica formed the four- mile team. Track Coach, Dan Boland was unable to attend the meet, so assistant coach Earl Kyle took his place. Kyle said the meet was highly competitive. "Most of the girls in the four-mile relay ran their best times. They placed first in their heat," said Kyle. "I think the girls gave a pretty good, effort for a small team. The meet is really designed for schools with large teams. We are a small team and I think they were overwhelmed. The kids ran pretty good times." ALGONQUIN - The Skyhawks did more than just eighth at the Jacobs Invitational Saturday. They broke one meet record and two school records. Missy Christie's second place in the mile broke a meet record with a time of 5:33.0. The time was also a Johnsburg school record. Christie also took a second in the discus with h toss of 94-10. Another school record was broken in the mile relay. That team took'a sixth with a time of 4:32.3. Bev Hiller turned in her personal best in the long jump, which was good for a fourth place with a 15-6% jump. A fifth place was recorded by th edistant medley relay team with a time of 4:36.2.
