On A Wing And A Prayer After completing its port df last Saturday's practice search and rescue mission, a plane comes in for a landing at Gait air port, Greenwood. A number of Civil Air Patrol (CAP) cadets are grouped near an aircraft, where they are learning the ins and outs of handljng an airplaneon the flight line. The practice mission was sponsored by the U.S. Air Force (USAF) and was designed to provide the USAF with an evaluation of the response of CAP Groups 22 and 6 to an emergency situation. The CAP groups were judged on their speed of response, han-. dling of oircraft and ground crews, communications, rescue preparations and base procedures. Air and ground crews searched for ELT's (emergency locator transmitters), which were hidden in the target area, west of McHenry. The tran smitters are set off when a plane experiences a rough landing or a crash. The crews recorded a number of "finds" during Saturday's exercise. Approximately 150 CAP members and Air Force personnel took part in the simulation. In addition to the ground crews, upwards of 10 aircraft took off from Waukegan and Gait airports to take part in the mission. More photos op- pear on page 19 of this issue.
