PATWIRTZ EDITOR'S NOTE: This is part two of a preview on the McHenry 12-inch softball league. Taylor Made has steadily improved from five victories in 1981 (its first season) to seven victories in 1982. The 1983 season could be the year for John Sytsma's crew to make the playoffs. The starting lineup should see' Randy Rodiek (pitcher), Jim Gray (catcher), Dave Gossell (first base), Sytsma (second base), Henry Glick (shortstop), Fritz Larsen (third base), Jim Ubrig (left field), Tom Nusbaum (left center), Fred Stocker (right center), and Jack Spindler (right field). "FreaTstocker and Jim Gray were the standouts in 1962. Stocker was the number eight hitter in the league with a strong .551. Gray hovered at the .500 mark all season and finished at .451. Both have powered and can poke the long ball. , Henry Glick (.450) looked im pressive at shortstop all season long and moved his batting average steadily upward. Tom Burke (.478) can play most positions while five new faces could give Taylor Made all they need to make the playoffs. Gossell, Larsen and Ubrig have looked good in spring training, while Don Wickersham and Tim Evans will help later in the season. Sytsma's team finished 12-2 in the Fall League at Louie's Waterhole while capturing 13th in the Wisconsin Umpire's Association Class D Tournament. Jack's Snack Shop - McHenry Oil Co. made one big pickup for the 1983 season as they traded Gary Rosing to Little John's for the number three hitter in the league, Pete Blackburn. Blackburn, who hit .575 in 1982, will catch to the pitching of playing Manager Dave Oeffling. Rounding out the lineup will be Rich Jablonski (first base), Oeffling (second base), Dave Jackson or Brian Greve (shortstop), Doug Oeffling (third base), with Steve Knox, Dan McAuliffe, Bob Michels and Brian DiBlasi sharing the outfield chores. John Oeffling, a .636 hitter a year ago with not enough at bats to take the batting championship, will play full time in 1983. Bob Michels provides defense and offense (.404 in '82, but .545 in the playoffs). However, a question mark is Dave Jackson, who hit .556 in the playoffs, but a winter accident may handicap the shortstop. Rich Jablonksi provides muscle, along with Michels, in the Snack Shop lineup. Joe Sullivan and Tom Ludwig will play when available. King's Row has been in trouble ever since Chuck Marke left to play with the Rusty Nail. To make matters worse, John Walkington also left with eight others. It leaves Manager Ken Whitman another gap to fill. Probable starting lineup will be Tim Whitman or Bob Buss (pitcher), Eric Maquire (catcher), Mine Rankin or Rick Sorenson (first base), Harry Grohl (second base), Willie Howard (shortstop), Bob Buss (third base), with Mark Hansen, John Watson, John Pappas, Bill Cable and Jamie Fung in the outfield. Rankin (.485), Willie Howard (.480), Jamie Fung (.435) and Rick Sorenson (.417) return as the top four hitters left from the 1982 squad. The season's records have dipped from 8-8an *81 to 6-10 a year ago. 1983 might find the Row in worse shape. Little John's has added five new faces to its probable starting lineup in 1983 which has given owner John Little an optimistic outlook for the upcoming season. Added to the acquisition of Gary Rosing on the mound will be newcomers Steve Cable, Bill Thomas, Jim Pinkstaff and Steve Himpleman. "Youth and greater speed can't hurt," said Manager Ray Rigsby. The lineup includes Rosing (pit cher), Kip Novotny (catcher), Steve Cable (first base), Steve Lane (second base), Bill Thomas (shortstop), Jim Pinkstaff (third base), Jim Quinn (left field), Jim Grabowski (left center), Steve Himpleman (right center), and either John Griffith or Bill Beterson (right center). Steve Lane was last season's standout on a team which managed only two victories in 1962. Lane Hit .436, led the team in triples, homeruns and RBI's. John Griffith (.438) was another dependable hitter who has hit around the .500 mark over the past three seasons. Griffith plays infield and may see some outfield duty. The outfield is defensively one of the finest with Quinn and Grabowski coming up with many fine plays in 1982. Gary McGregor, Ray Cooper and Bobby "Black Shoes" Prendergast round out the Little John's lineup Delia Saunders trys to hold the slim lead over Crown's Heidi Lorenz during the 1600 meter run. Lorenz eventually over took Saunders and captured the 1600 meter Fox Valley Crown. All was not lost, as Saunders had earlier in the day captured the 3200 meter title.
