(A monthly column from the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Project of the McHenry County Conservation District.) Take a ride down any country road or highway, or any street in town, and you can see the results of wildlife collisions with cars. Why so many killed? ' Wildlife has learned to utilize the roads and streets that slice their territories into little pieces. They use bridges, sewers, and culverts for homes. They travel the unobstructed edges, and forage for food. The mowed roadsides offer tender green grass and make it easier to find insects, small rodents and seeds. In winter, the plowed roads and streets are easy foraging ground and a source of grit for seed-eating birds. The litter that accumulates along roads attracts many animals, birds and insects. And wildlife has learned to utilize the dead as a food source. Crows, skunks, opossums feed on the readily available carrion. Small birds and rodents are at tracted by the less obvious dead in sects. A look at your windshield will give you an idea of the insects that accumulate along the road. But aren't wild birds and animals afraid of noise and fast moving ob jects? Don't they naturally fear things that are larger than themselves? Unfortunately, when it comes to cars the answer to these questions is usually "no". The wildlife of our area has become accustomed to cars. Hundreds of times a day, vehicles go speeding passed them. They learn that vehicles are not predators that are interested in catching them, and they learn to ignore cars. The number of wild lives lost on our roads and streets each year would be hard to calculate, but whatever the number, it could be reduced. Many people drive with the assumption that wildlife is aware of an approaching vehicle and will stay out of the way. They assume that like a person, wildlife will judge the time and the danger. Actually,, wildlife will react more like a small child than an adult. You should expect wild animals and birds to become confused when they are on the road, especially when vehicles are approaching from opposite directions. Remember that an animal that has just crossed the road may be in a new area that needs to be explored cautiously. He may choose to dart back across the road rather than risk the unknown dangers of a new area. Each season of the year produces conditions that affect wildlife's ability to cope with traffic. Mating season instincts distract males. In spring, females are pregnant, and, therefore, less swift and agile. A doe that can normally jump a fence and cross «a road with no problem is now burdened with the weight of her fawns. When young are norn, the adults are preoccupied with feeding quickly and returning to care for their young. The activities of catching food, defending a territory, or raising young can consume all the attention of wildlife. They are most likely to make wrong "traffic" judgments when engaged in these occupations. Young wildlife is most vulnerable. They are still learning about the world and their own abilities^ They are most likely to make the wrong judgment. Many of the wild animals and birds that will be brought to the McHenry County Conservation district's Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education project in the coming months will be the direct or indirect result of car collisions: adults with broken banes and internal injuries; young Orphaned when a parent was killed. While there is no way to completely eliminate road-killed wildlife, in creased awareness and concern from us as drivers can help reduce needless loss of wildlife. When it is safe and possible to do so, we can "give wildlife a brake. "Better yet, try driving on country roads £ts if you were driving through a School zone. The reduced speed will help wildlife and increase youropportunity to enjoy the beauty of springtime. If you find an injured or orphaned wild animal or bird, please call Sally Joosten, director of Wildlife Rehabilitation, at 338-3276 or the McHenry County Conservation district at 338-1405 or 678-4431.
