By the mid-'60s that studio became known as "Hitsville U.S.A." the home of Motown records, whose roster of stars included the Supremes, the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops and Marvin Gaye. Those 25 years will be celebrated on Monday, May 16 when NBC airs "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, FPrever." On-stage reunions by the Supremes and Jacksonf Five, a singing battle between the Temptations and the Four Tops, and individual performances by Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder are among the show's highlights. Richard Pryor will host the special. Before Gordy started the label, "Detroit was the kind of place where if you wanted to make it, you'd have to leave town," says Melvin Franklin, bass singer of the Tempta tions, a member of the group since its formation In 1960. "Motown represented a place we could go to in our home town that had growth potential." What is the secret of the label's success and longevity? Without pausing, Franklin says it's due to Berry Gordy Jr. "It was the man and his approach. He was a go-getter. He is a go-getter -- a person who knew how to Work with people: "Yes always meant yes. He always kept his word, never committed himself to something he couldn't do. He helped you believe in yourself the same way he believed." Part of Gordy's strategy involved "lightening up" Motown's black sound in an attempt tb broaden his artists' appeal. Thus the label released albums such as "The Supremes Sing Rogers and ,Hart," "The Four Tops on Broadway" and the Temptations' "In a Mellow Mood." Franklin views Gordy's strategy as a necessary part of his group^rowth. "In those days, we were seeking exposure in all areas," says Franklin. "We know we could sing any kind of thing, not just r & b. We were opening the door up to the whole world to let them know that black people sung songs not just oogie-boogie songs. "It was a way of growing, a way of showing our abilities and becoming acceptable to America that we' weren't r & b artists, but artists in the truest sense of the word." ©1983 Compulog (815)385-9240 Doi l y 8 :30 5 :30 Sa t 8 30 3 Wed 8 .30 1
