"After 18 years, the whole show was turned around. It was a dangerous thing to-do, but it saved us. We had dropped badly in the ratings, and then we discovered that informa tional spots on the show were drawing viewers. The 15-minute segments in which we had these spots went up. "So now, all shows are informational. In many of our markets we have dou bled our ratings. This change only began in February, too." Griffin says the change was based on studies con cerning the short attention spans of American viewers who use remote-control switches. "I do it myself. If I'm flipping the dials and some thing doesn't grab me, I go 16 anottter channel." One problem with talk shows is that they have gotten too similar, Griffin claims. ' . " "One day I watched some talk shows -- I do watch , other people's shows r-- and the same guest appeared on three of them, mine included, on the same day. The public doesn't want that." «, As befits someone of his />Md HanHUnB Maufl vnn nvaannv ravwi 00 Tom Cottle Show SI ® Jerry Falwell ® MOVIE: 'Seven Times Seven' Seven convicts plan to break out of jail, break into the Royal Mint and then back into jail. "( recall once in New York, I was invited to the opening of a new restau rant and I accepted. It came out in a gossip column that I had showed up with a party of 12 and after the meal yelled 'Thanks for picking up the check.' Yes, I showed up with a party of 12, but I paid for it. I even sent a copy of my canceled check to the writer, but they never retracted." The silver-haired, blue- eyed Griffin is not bitter, however, about his treat ment. He just realizes what great targets celebrities make. He certainly wouldn't trade his celebrity for any one else's -- particularly now that his talk show is on the rise again. ©19S3 Compulog SI @S> Revival Fires 4:00AM ID ID Prog cont'd PAGC21 O MOV*: 'Tho Ma* An emo tionally (honored young man is reha bilitated through the skill and understanding of a psychiatrist.
