hj* ,̂ PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MAY 20,1983 EARL WALSH So I Hear / We haven't seen those dogs who ran morning with a group of McHenryites loose during the night, but know they to plan for McHenry Day on Jt^ne 5th have paid us a visit. at the McHenry County Historical _ Society headquarters in Union. We attended a meeting Monday -- \ N - vou A* S W® D\N\NS ' vmn ^\f\|j\\TS ^ \-\0W\t 0II\\\O TrQ\MG HO^t I:'™! w 0 V ) 1hanmW^ ,1 M COOKED LUNCtHl,is\iav 1: 0SoVJW WtCON-\ H -shf ^>on _ Editor "Brenda" will be giving the event plenty of ink during the next couple of weeks so be watching. To a man and to a woman, the group vowed to do everything to create enough interest in the day to draw the largest crowd of any area in the county. Nancy Fike was recalling Old Timers used to tell about having to back those Model T Fords up a hill when the gas tank wap low. I repeated how we used to drive to .Woodstock to go down Snyder's Hill, then return by way of Mason Hill. Climbing either of those hills wouiil have been a strain on the Tijf*Lizzie. With the summer season ap proaching (Don't worry - it will get here) I am reminded of an in formative talk by Senator Jack Schaffer. *' Speaking of Fox Biver and the Chain o' Lakes, the Senator told us 18,000 boats passed through the McHenry Locks in 1982. That is making waves. This McHenry area has come a long way since the days of the row boat. Canoes came along. So did litte 5- horse-power motors to take the place of oars. Then came the power boats a little boats like little fish had to stay near the shore. _ Fishermen had to give way to boaters. History tells us about the Indians building a ferry across Fox Biver at t#e location where we now see the Old Bridge Tavern. Nobody ever figured out where the Indians got the flat stones to build the ferry. I haven't seen anything in old history books about horses and buggies crossing the river near Bally O'Gregg. The water was shallow, but I remember having to put my feet up on the dashboard when the water reached the box of the buggy. ys fiW i swim i Irish in the Honor your Deceased War That is where the boys Prairie used to go for a evening. ' No swimming suits. Grandma made me take an old overalls to wear in the water. Wearing that overalls would make a. boy sink so there was no point in drowning. Of course, it behooved me to soak my "swim suit" in the water before going home to Grandma. Now this is a revoltin' development. We received notice of definitely being winners of a big prize and please phone. Phone we did. Then came the questions: Are you gainfully employed? V Are you and your wife between the ages of 21 and 65? "Sorry, You are not eligible, but thanks for calling." "Thank you", says I, "thanks for nothing". Our day was brightened Tuesday when Catherine Heaney toured in from downtown Volo and came a- callin'.
