Guides also inform students it Welcome Days and accompany them to gampus activities scheduled for Aug; 24-28. Former Resident Awarded Degree MARK MAYER MacMurray college celebrated its 132nd commencement recently and conferred bachelor's degrees on the 119 members of the class of 1983. Among them was Mark Mayer, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Mayer, 4720 W. Parkview, who earned a degree in Physical Education. Graduates of the liberal arts college heard an address from Jacksonville's Harris Rowe, chairman of the college's board of trustees. Scholarships For Frances A more Frances Amore of Solon Mills, a recent Marian high school graduate, is among approximately 370 prospective college freshmen who have been awarded academic scholarships by Indiana State university for the 1963-84 academic year. the scholarships, covering the contingent portion of the fees, are awarded to students ranking in the upper 10 per cent of their high school graduating class. Each is a four-year awdrd providing the student main­ tains the scholastic standards established by the university. This year the award amounts to $922. Cite Honor Students One hundred and sixty-two students have been named to the Dean's list at Ripon college for the second semester of the 1982-83 academic year in recognition of their high scholastic achievements. To qualify for the Dean's list, students must earn a 3.40 grade point average or better (on a 4.0 sy&ejn^and complete a rataimum of. 12 hours of regular course work for the semester. Among the students named to the Dean's list were Krista C. Kaefer, daughter of Mr. Thomas Kaefer, 4940 N. Oakley, Chicago, and Ms. Gertrude' H. Kaefer, 5211 Patton drive , Wonder Lake. Miss Dick Graduates The University of Northern Colorado presented degrees to 1,106 graduate and undergraduate students at its spring quarter commencement. The graduation was held at Butler- Hancock hall, with State Senator Martha Ezzard, R-Englewood, giving the charge. The graduates included Kathleen Dick, 28059 N. Meadowlawn road, McHenry, who received her BA degree. academic year. Ms. Malone is a senior in the program. The award is based on service to'the university and-or the community. Recipients are chosen by the Medical Technology Student council. McHenry Man Earns Degree John p. Metz, son of Mr. and Mrs. AichardcRalph*l710 Emerald drive, McHenry, received an associate degree May 14 in Applied Science Dental Technology from Southern Illinois university^ Carbondale. He will continue his studies at the university, working toward a Bachelor's degree in Business and will graduate May 12, 1984. John graduated from McHenry West campus in 1979. Two Earn Flight Course Certificates Sixty-five students in the University of Illinois Institute of Aviation have earned flight certificates and ratings. Among them are Aric Akins, 1516 Lincoln road, private pilot certificate land Dana Andreas, 3920 Hillcrest, flight instructor certificate. The students earned the certificates by completing spring semester courses and by passing Federal Aviation administration tests. The awards include private pilot and flight instructor certificates, and com­ mercial instrument and multiengine ratings. GRADUATE WITH HONOR Laura Jean Nasebrandt, of 10220 Thayer road, Wonder Lake was one of .197 students to receive degrees at commencement ceremonies at North Central college, Napervllle. Miss Nasebrandt graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in computer science-mathematics. SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT Ten University of Wisconsin - Platteville students, majoring in animal science, have been recognized for scholastic achievement by the American Society of Animal Science including Ruth Pierce, a recent graduate from McHenry. ON PRESIDENT'S LIST Henry W. Glick has been named to the President's honor list for the spring quarter at DeVry Institute of Technology, Lombard, 111. To be in­ cluded on this list, his grade point was a 4.0 average out of a possible 4.0. His further studies are to receive a degree in Computer Engineering. ON DEAN'S LIST Lisa Ann Benoy, 316 Shepherd Hill lane, a freshman, has been named to the Dean's list at Knox college for the spring term. A minimum grade point average of 3.67 on a 4.0 scale is required, among other factors, for inclusion on the list. NAMED OFFICER Six Knox college students have been elected officers of Knox's chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity. Among them is Keith Alan Belzer, McHenry, who has been elected secretary. History Museum In Annual Meet Leta Clark, membership chairman and retired teachfer in McHenry School District 15, presents her report at the Historical society's 19th annual meeting. At the recent nineteenth annual meeting of the McHenry County Historical society in Union, members and guests were presented with reports from the society's officers that told of accomplishments. The number of county school children visiting the museum this past season topped the 1,000 mark; visitors to the museum were also up; some 3,000 artifacts had been accessioned into the museum collection since the last annual meeting; and the number of traveling exhibits on loan throughout the county increased as did the number of programs given to groups and organizations by society PAGE 17 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, JULY 15,1963 directors and the museum curator. The society's records were microfilmed and a successful series of antiques courses were offered last winter. During the previous fall, the society conducted ah historic bus tour of Dorr, Nunda, and McHenry townships. An endowment fund for the operation of the museum was established, and the Historic Sites committee plaqued seven historic structures. Lake County Fair To Open July 27 The 1983 Lake County Fair will be held July 27 through 31 at the fairgrounds, Routes 45 and 120, east of Grayslake. Highlights of the fair include three rodeos, two demolition derbies, truck, tractor and horse pulls, an auction of champion livestock, a country- western talent contest, a politicians' hogcalling competition, and a beauty pageant. The fair also features agricultural and other exhibits numbering an estimated 13,000, commercial exhibits and a midway. Children 12 and under are admitted free. Senior citizens are admitted for half price Wednesday through Friday. Season tickets are available. For details, call 223-2204. WALCZYNSKI, JR. Stanley A. Walczynski, Jr., for­ merly of McHenry (Sunnyside Estates) was awarded the degree of Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago June 10. Walczynski, whose parents reside in Sunnyside Estates, is a 1973 graduate of Marian Central Catholic high school in Woodstock, and also received a. Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Bradley university in 1977. He is currently employed as district engineer for the Environmental Management department of Waste Management, Inc. of Oakbrook, 111., and is responsible for engineering and permitting activities for various company facilities and operations. He and his wife, Pamela, reside in Schaumburg, 111. Works On Doctorate Mark Miller recently returned to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville after vacationing at home in McHenry with his family, the William E. Millers. iiwnoon Mark, a straight A scholar, is en­ tering his second year of a 3-year program for a doctoral degree in Psychology (guidance and coun­ seling) at the University of Virginia. He has already completed a Psychology manual now in publication and is doing research and working on future publications. Outstanding Award Honorable Mention Mary Malone, 2911 North Wooded lane, McHenry, has received honorable mention in the Outstanding Student Award competition sponsored by Marquette university's program in Medical Technology for the 1982-83 BLOCK GRANTS William L. Kem- piners, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, has announced that the state health department is accepting applications from local entities qualified to conduct comprehensive public health services. Funds totaling $1,414,027 from the Preventive Health and Health Services block grant will be made available to qualified entities. Public Health is also accepting applications from those qualified to conduct maternal and child health services aimed at reducing in­ fant mortality.
