Guess you aren't supposed to have fun during a visit to a patient in a hospital, but fun we had. Have always said a visitor shouldn't stay too long during such calls, but time slipped away. Jake dialed the phone and his wife, Tillie, (another of my favorite girls) must have been surprised when I was on the line. --And here's an old one. I heard a.« speaker say it more than SO years ? ago: "A woman's skirt should be long enough to cover the subject and short? enough to be interesting." That's what the man said. TTie McHenry County Defenders began these drives on a monthly basis in 1973, then later on a bi-monthly basis in order to give individuals an easy means to recycle materials that would normally end up in the trash can and later in the landfill. In 1982, in the town of McHenry alone, approximately 450 tons of newspapers, glass, steel and aluminum cans in addition to more than 1,000 gallons of used motor oil were kept out of the landfill through recycling efforts in McHenry and Johnsburg. With a population of 15,000 served through these recycling efforts centered in McHenry, and 3.5 lbs. of trash produced daily per person, only 4Vfe percent of the trash beings produced is recycled. Research has shown that 30-35 percent can be recycled through efforts on everyone's part. The Defenders encourage all families to talk to neighbors, carpool recycling efforts, and increase that 4'/2 percent. Anyone .with questions regarding... recycling may call the McHenry County Defenders representative at 385-8512.
