' BARBECUES If you're planning a barbecue, the National Safety Council says to set up the grill in an open area that is out of the traffic pattern, and to make sure the grill is sturdy and stable. After the charcoal lighter fluid has been added, ignite the charcoal with a long wooden match or by tossing a lighted match onto the charcoal. The Council also says that you should choose lean meat and trim the fat to prevent fire flare- ups. To extinguish flare-ups, have available a plant foliage mister filled with water. In addition, never move portable barbecues into a closed-in area without having at least one door open for ventilation. Smoldering charcoal can build up lethal con centrations of carbon monoxide gas. On July 24, James E.
