McHenry American Legion Auxiliary UNIT 491 McHenry Unit 491 of tne American Legion.Auxiliary was represented at the sixty-third annual convention of the Department of Illinois, July 7-9, at the Bismarck hotel, Chicago. At­ tending were: Mrs. Maria Guettler, president; Mrs. Pearl Cooper, first vice-president; Mrs. Vickey Bottari, second vice-president; Mrs. Dorothy Messer, secretary and Mrs. Ruth Mrachek, public relations chairman. . Special guests were Larry Besson, department commander; Edward Czaja, department senior vice- commander and Mrs. Shirley Hall, Le Chapeau Departemental, Eight and Forty ; Mrs. Rao Shaw, past national president and representatives of other patriotic organizations. A memorial service was held by Department Chaplain Doris Copeland for the 918 deceased members of the Department of Illinois, of which six were members of the McHenry unit. Distinguished guest at the con­ tention, National President, Mrs. June Stolte, gave an interesting talk about her travels during tne past year. Becky Gabel, Fox River Grove, received a plaque for the best report on Past Presidents' Parley. A total of 570 girls participated at MacMurray college for the forty-third annual session of Illini Girls' State. McHenry delegates to the con­ vention attended the Unit-Past Presidents' Parley dinner where nurses' scholarships were awarded to 2r81 apjpllcaftts. Judy Hdnntng of McHenry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Honning, was one of the recipients to receive a $500 scholar­ ship. Judy and her parents attended the dinner, which was held in the pavilion at the Bismarck hotel. Pearl Cooper, of McHenry Unit, was awarded a plaque for first place for her 11th District public relations book. Ruth Mrachek also from McHenry Unit, was awarded a plaque for first place for her Unit's public relations book, and her book has been sent to the National Public Relations chairman, for further judging. The convention ended with the in­ stallation of the 1983-84 department officers. Mrs. Irene Lofton, Cham­ paign, was installed as the new department president; Mrs. Angie Powell, Wheaton, first vice-Dresident; Miss Rose Marie Loparco, second vice-president; Mrs. Maxine Martin, historian and Mrs. Virginia Holt as treasurer. Mrs. Mary Gorny, Glen Ellyn, was installed as 11th district president. The bridge project on Rawson Bridge road over the Fox river began on Oct. 8,1974, with the County board appropriation of $10,000 to study replacement of the old bridge - a bridge built in 1906. The cost of the new bridge - $1,650,000 - was shared by federal government, Nunda road district and McHenry county participation. Speakers heralded this c as thev took turns discussing that Jed to the start of construction on April 28, 1982. The five-span, 510-foot long structure opened to traffic Dec 21 1982. Those who have served as the transportation committee chairmen hiring the study and construction period included Ed Buss and Ton Huemann of McHenry. Jim Rakow, county superintendent of highways, reviewed tne history of the bridge and steps leading to replacement of the 1908 structure. That first bridge--240-feet long with a 18-foot roadway-- cost $8,500 and was funded by the cooperation of local and county governments. Hie cost to -emove that old bridge prior to the -ecent construction was $25,000. By mid-1978, the County board hao agreed to include Rawson bridge as a project utilizing Federal Bridge Replacement funds. The Federal Highway administration approved Rawson bridge as a federal project in August, 1978. In June, 1977, the County board hired Collins and Rice, Inc. to begin preliminary engineering w^k. construction as outlined by a letter of understanding in mid-1979, and in November, 1980, the county sought final right-of-way acquisition. It took until July, 1981, for the Illinois Department of Transportation to approve final construction plans. After the final land acquisition was accomplished in October, 1981, a construction contract was awarded the Belvidere Construction Co., Belvidere, on March 23, 1982. Con­ struction of the 32-foot wide roadway, five-span structure took from April to December, 1982. In addition to the general con- xactor, Belvidere Construction Co., two sub-contractors working on the bridge were Lakeland Construction Company, McHenry, and Curran Contracting, Crystal Lake. The bridge serves an important area of the county, linking Island Lake to the north of Cary and Lake county. In file financial report, important fund-raising projects were the Weight-A-Thon and the Bike-A-Thon. Together they netted about $12,000, Graves reported. The board agreed to take steps to inform the public of many services available to cancer patients and their families through the local chapter. This includes transportation for treatment when necessary, equip­ ment such as beds and other facilities cancer patients ' require, and educational materials to assist people in spotting danger signals of cancer. Another key service is home health care. To help the public become more aware of the scope of the board's services and where to locate a board member to seek help, Mrs. Rechisky requested the names of the board be sent to news media, listed by com­ munity.
