(Continued from page ft) month ago in Duluth, Minn. "I usually rUn90 miles a wedc^but I | only ran 50 last week to let it heal." Wheeler, a 29-year-old McHenry High School teacher thought he could still catch up to Valentine towards the end of the race. "He seemed to come back to me a little bit at the three or four mile mark. But he finished pretty strong," Wheeler said. "I couldn't hear anybody come at me at all. I was kinda in no-mans- land. I had nobody by me. It was nice to have some people around me cheering." River Run Wheeler finished in seventh place last year. Wade Cepulis, also of McHenry, was the third runner to cross the finish line in a time of 36:20.5. the third woman to cross tie finish line was Deb Sphabow of McHenry in a time of 46:33.5. Men 50 ft over: Jack Comes (Twin Lakes) 50:47.3, Paul Giovanetti (McH) 51:09.8, David Carr (DeKalb) Chapel Hill After the match play of July 19, the team standings in the Tuesday Ladies League showed Mar Ray has taken . , the lead with 59Mj points. Nowak is a close second with 58^, Little Chef has 54, Blue Camel 50%, Top Deck 48, McHenry Floral' 46, Steffans 45 and Fox Hole Tap 38%. The contest that day was for. in dividual low putts. Meg Sundberg was low in class A with 14. Jane Lowery was the winner in class B with 14 and Karen Schmitt led class C with 13. On July 26 golfing was much more pleasant as there was welcome relief from the torrid temperatures of the nine proceeding days. We had some pretty birdies flying. Libby Johnson birdied five. Joan Popelka birdied 10 and Judy Domini ck chipped in on 13 to birdie that hole. Judy also chipped in on 12 and ended the nine with only 12 putts. There were several other nice chip- ins. Edie Nimsgren on four, Libby Johnson on nine, Joan Popelka on 10, Karen Schmitt on four and Lu Funk on seven. Esta. Divot Dolls Except for Kathy Vehring's tangling with the trees on many holes, Lynn McKiernan's using the bridge on number eight to ricochet over the creek, Bernice Dolce's hitting the same tree twice and Liz Nolan's pulling her nose in just in time to save it from being bobbed by Marcie Wakitsch's fairway shot; things were pretty calm for the ladies at McHenry Country Club. A combination Beat-the-Champ and Grandmothers' Tournament brought out many of the gals on another truly beautiful day. With the grace that is typical of Card Cooney, our current champ set an easily attainable goal - for her challengers by netting 77. Those who challenged and won were Joan Buss, Betty Mohan, Betty Phelan, Carole Barnicle, Laverne Harpling, Gloria Spiess, Bernice Dolce, Betty Smith, Gloria Otth, Fran Herrman, Dot Baker, Speedy Neuman and Shirley Nye. In the Grandmothers' Tournament, a three-way tie of 73 each was shared by Joan Buss, Betty Mohan and Betty Phelan in class A. In class B, Bernice Dolce was low with 74. Class C found Dot Baker and Speedy Neuman tied with 76 each. And in class D, it was Betty Wayman with 78. In class B, non-grandmothers Larverne Harpling and Gloria Spiess netted with 72 each, while Dolce Women's Tuesday 16 Inch Oak Park Ed's Fritzsches Palace Old Bridge Greg's Sullivans , Scores Old Bridge 13 Sullivans 9 and Esther Jemiola low-putted with 30 each. Class C found Fran Herrmann's 75 to be low net along with her 29 putts for low putts. And in class D, Shirely Nye low-netted with 74, while Betty Wayman low putted with 31. Low putts of the day were 27, rolled in by Betty Mohan in class A. The nifty Niner's event of Best-Odd- Holes found Fran Brown the winner, followed by Dorothy Flynn and Lori Gaudsen. Barb Johnson rolled in low putts of 15, followed by Flynn with 16. Dorothy is really as much a leader as she is a follower. Along with a couple of birdies, several chip-ins were reported. Virginia Turner started things going along that line by chipping over the sand on number one and directly into the cup. Then Speedy Neuman followed suit with a chip-in on number three. The same kind of action on number nine put some extra zing into Betty Wayman's life as did a chip-in on number 10 for Ethel Koehler. A common occurrance for Carol Cooney was her birdie on number 14. Besides her birdie on number one, Turner dropped a dilly on number four, just one-inch short of an eagle. Well, Virginia, slightly firmer roll next time. Next week the gals set out on their serious Club and Class Championship Tournament. Al three-week, no- nonsense event. Hopefully, that will lead to more -- Happy Golfing! JULY 29 im McHenry Area 12 Inch Fox Hole Clinches First Pigtail WOODSTOCK TOURNAMENT McHenry South All-Stars: Jenny Acred, Kim Belzer, Becky Covalt, Eileen Douglass, Shelly Gray, Stacey Johnson, Cindy Marinangel, Jenny Meyers, Tammy Peters, Kim Powers, Cris Roper, Jenny Samen, Cindy Shaver, Kim Snyder, Kasandra Weiler. The McHenry South All-Stars took a third place in the 10-team Woodstock Pigtail Tournament last weekend. The two losses were to McHenry North and Cary. McHenry South 15 Woodstock 8: McHenry South had to come from behind with a five-run fifth. Six players had two hits each for McHenry South. Kim Powers and Kasandra Weiler both knocked in three runs each, while Tammy Peters doubled. Stacey Johnson scored three times. Kim Belzer was the winning pitcher, striking out nine. Jenny Bye had three hits for Woodstock, adding a double. Kris Penza tripled. McHenry South 11 Johnsburg 5: McHenry South took a 5-0 lead after three innings and then hung on for the win. Eileen Douglass led McHenry with three hits, including a triple and four RBI's. Jenny Acred and Kim Powers both tripled for McHenry. Kim Powers knocked in three runs. Kim Belzer was the winning pitcher for McHenry, striking out nine. Chris Basely had two hits for Johnsburg, while Jenny Boggs doubled. PATWIRTZ The Fox Hole Tap guaranteed - themselves a fourth straight first place finish with a 24-8 thrashing of Taylor Made. But the victory may not have been as sweet as their earlier 8-5 conquest over Rusty Nail Inn on Monday evening, during McHenry Area men's 12 Inch softball. The Tap. has two remaining games versus Lakeside Inn and Little John's on Monday. The second place rival West End Pub has only one game left against Jewel Park. Only a twin Tap loss, plus a Pub victory would cause a co-championship. Gary Gilpin may not have had any hits in the Fox Hole's confrontation with Rusty Nail, but the third baseman's glove was instrumental in cutting down three. straight Nail hitters in the third and fourth innings. Meanwhile, Gilpin's teammates were busy taking a 6-3 lead in the first in ning. The Rusty Nail's Jim Zasada smashed a two-run single, followed by Chuck Marke's RBI base hit in the first inning. But Fox Hole defense prevented a bigger inning as Jeff Meyers made a running catch to rob Don Bentz of extra bases. Bill Meyer's solo homerun put the Fox Hole on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. An inning later, Jeff Meyers slammed an RBI single which put the Tap in the lead for good. Vinnie Freund had singled in a run earlier in the inning, while Ron Miller had scored on a poor throw. Nail shortstop John Meyers made a nice stop on Gilpin's grounder deep in the hole between short and third during the Tap third inning. But an inning later, the Fox Hole scored twice as both Rich and Jeff Meyers hit RBI singles. The Rusty Nail narrowed the Tap lead to just two runs on John Walkington's sacrifice fly in the fifth. Again the Fox Hole Tap came back with a run to take a 7-4 lead. Joe Dehn's double, plus Mike Peterson's RBI single brought in the run. Jim Zasada doubled and scored on Gary Schmitt's two out single to again close the gap to only a pair in the sixth. • Three straight singles after two outs in the Fox Hole sixth, put the Tap in Graduate Johnsburg's Anthony Bianchi Jr. completed a two-week baseball course at the Mickey Owen Baseball School, near Miller, Mo. Bianchi's training specialized in all phases of the game through the combination of in struction and game experience. i front by three runs. Ron Miller, Jeff Mevers and Jim Yaworski combined for the hitting, with Yaworski getting the RBI. Twig Miller's three-for-three and Jeff Meyer's three-for-four led the Fox Hole 16-hit attack. Fox Hole Tap 24 Taylor Made 8 Taylor Made scored five times in the first inning and still trailed by six after one inning of play. The Fox Hole added a nine rim third inning to their 11 run first. Jeff Meyers and Joe Dehn each went three-for-three. Meyers scored four runs with three RBI's and in cluded a triple, plus an inside the park homerun. Dehn drove in four runs with two runs scored and included a triple. West End Pub 15 Johnsburg 9 The winners used a six-run first inning and a five-run fourth to overcome the Businessmen as each team remains in second place in their respective divisions. Tom Burke's pair of triples, three runs scored and three RBI's ignited the West End Pub. Both John Michaels and Rick Wiegman added three hits. Johnsburg's Jerry Brodin slammed a three-run homer, plus he went three- for-four. West End Pub 6 King's Row 5 The West End Pub used their second triple play of the season to end a King's Row rally in the final inning to win. With the tying run on second and the lead run on first, Harry Groll lined to Mike Hagberg at short. After the catch, Hagberg threw to first for out number two and then Doc Wallen fired to Tom Burke at third to nail the runner from second breaking to third for the final out. Wallen went three-for-three, while Rick Wiegman drove in half the Pub runs on two big hits to lead the victors. Brian Matheson had three hits and two RBI's to help King's Row. King's Row 10 Huemann's 7 King's Row used five separate two- run innings to overcome a seven-run Huemann's fifth inning. Bob Buss had three hits for King's Row. Jim Althoff led Huemann's going three-for-three with an RBI. * 3 Toft * 4 -fc • * *•;.* mmmm •4 Ton Ti ll: FLOOR TO CFII.ING STCMi Palace Bowl 9 Fritzsches 8 Oakd Park 13 Gregs 2 Few men think other men deserve their suc cesses. y RINGWOOD MATERIALS On Route 31 * Just North Of Ringwood Road - 4 Miles North ,Of McHenry Specializing in: •Top Soil •Ploy Box Sand • White Stone • Concrete Grovel •Decorative Stone •Patio Blocks PICK UP YOURSELF* SAVE!
