Thiede says youngsters participate in the horse program throughout the 4-H year, September through August, and are required to keep records on the feeding and care of their horses. "Other requirements 4-H members have to meet to enable them to enter the horse show at the fair is their attendance at two dinks of nine offered through the year," Thiede says. She explained that the clinics teach members about horses, riding, care, safe ty and showing, "with options of a judging clinic." She's a member of the 4-H County Horse Committee, which is comprised of in terested volunteers who run the program and horse show. According to Thiede, more than 100 peo ple between the ages of eight and 19 years are signed up for the horse show this year. "Because of the large number of entries and classes, this year's 4-H horse show will be held for two days at the fair. Wecan'tfit everything into a one-day event," Thiede says. Classes in the show include showman ship, horsemanship, equitation--when the rider is judged and not the horse--gaming events such as barrel races and timed ac tivities and novice classes for lighter competition.
