The McHenry Plaindealer SHAW MEDIA NEWS SERVICE GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., - Even a new coach and a new quarterback didn't change the fate of the McHenry County Red Devils. The Devils saw their Northern States Football League record slip to 1-5 Saturday night as Grand Rapids dealt McHenry County a 24-8 loss. Bill Downs, the team's owner and general manager took over the coaching reigns from Don Penza who resigned Friday after the Red Devils won one of their first five games. The Devils acquired the services of quarterback Don Dunning as a replacement for Jeff White who is out for the season following shoulder surgery. Grand Rapids got on the scoreboard early just three minutes into the game Milt Andrews scored on a 29- yaid run. The extra point failed and Grand Rapids led 6-0. It extended the lead to 8-0 when the Broncos caught Dunning in the end zone for a safety. After McHenry failed to move the ball on its next possession, The Broncos scored on a Robert one-yard plunge. Dave Ninkowski's point after gave Grand Rapids a 15-0 advantage. But the hosts put the contest on ice in the fourth quarter as Clint Nash scored on a five-yard run with 14:22 remaining. The PAT was blocked. Dunning completed 11 of 23 passes for 152 yards in his debut with the Red Devils. He had one touchdown and two passes intercepted. He was also the leading rusher with 14 yards on six tries, while Pat Penza had 10 yards on six attempts. The Red Devils return home Saturday night as they host powerhouse Racine in a 7:30 battle at Dan Home Field next to Harvard High School. Pat Dunn, another top pitcher, was suffering from a shoulder injury for most of the season. McHenry came back with pitching performances from Tim Evans, Dave Smith and Dave Williams. Williams led all active pitchers with a 3.85 earned run average and a 1-2 record. Tim Evans finished with a 3-1 record with a 4.55 earned run average. Russ Williams, McHenry manager, looks back on the season with a gratifying feeling. "I thought we had a good year," said Williams. "The first-year kids learned a lot. I'm looking forward to next year. Most of the kids are coming back." One of the players he will be welcoming back next season is his scrappy second baseman and cen- terfielder Jeff Pankewicz. He led the team in batting, with a .492 average. But what killed the opposition the most was his base running. He led the team in stolen bases with 18, tied in doubles with four, and led in triples with three. Williams is also losing a couple of good players in Doug Mullen, Dave Smith and Dave Williams. "They emerged as the definite leaders of the team. The whole team started out as individuals and molded into a team effort. That's when things went together for us," said Williams. Smith finished with a .396 batting WINNING FORM -- Joe Render shows his perfect form on the bowling alley and then gives the thumbs up sign as he picked up the spare.
