RON SHEARER SHAW MEDIA NEWS SERVICE The spinnerbait is one of the all- time best bass lures, and there are several ways of producing fish on it. However, the most commonly-used and extremely effective approaches with the spinnerbait is casting in around heavy cover in shallow water. A standard tactic of all pro fishermen is to cast it past heavy cover and retrieve it right back through the cover, keeping it two to four inches under the surface of the water. Most of he time you'll be able to see the lure as it is being retrieved. In some cases when the water is very murky, you might not be able to see the spinnerbait, but it should be close enough to the surface to create a wake. This is the way I fish a spinnerbait most of the time and will be doing it along the Red Man Tournament Trail. Remember, a spinnerbait is vir tually weedless by nature of its design. It can be worked right through heavy brush. Don't be afraid to throw a spinnerbait into places you'd think a rabbit would be hiding if there was no water thprp Another good shallow water spin nerbait technique is what I call the summertime buzz method. This is simple running the bait right up next to the surface, creating a prominent, V-shaped wake. This works really well in the late spring and early summer period. In a tournament I won on Kentucky Lake, my partners and I were able to catch eight bass over five pounds each in two days by running the spinnerbait almost like a topwater bait, keeping right against the surface, but not letting the spinner blades break the surface. This is a tactic that also works really well over grass that lies only a couple of inches under the surface. You can run the bait over the cover and draw some really bigfish out of the grass to hit it. Soccer Meeting A meeting for all coaches will held Thursday by the McHenry Depart ment of Parks and Recreation soccer program. Adding players to the teams will be the topic. Coaches should check with their players to see if they are returning for the fall season. U you have any questions, call the department at 344-3300. Greve, Darlene Van Cleve.
