Being such, each home rightly has a queen. The Raymond Kiihhnan family takes that notion a step further. They have four queens. Four McHenry County 4-H Queens, that is. While several county families can claim three daughters as 4-H queens, the family of Raymond and Irene Kuhlman holds the record. All four daughters have been selected as 4-H queens by their county contemporaries. Sue, a "part-time nurse and full-time mother," began the Kuhlman reign in 1974 when she was selected county 4-H Queen. Diane, a certified public accountant, followed her sister's footsteps in 1977. Kami, a senior at Bradley University, was crowned in 1979, and Debbie, a sophomore at Bradley, was the 19614-H Queen. "It was kind of expected," Debbie adds with a chuckle. By the way, 20-year-old Karen is representing Hebron in the Miss McHenry County pageant this year. She's the first Kuhlman to compete for that title. She is sponsored by the Business Association of Hebron. • During a recent interview, Karen had to leave a little early to golf with some Chicago sports figures in McHenry. That's part of competing for Miss McHenry Coun ty, a totally different sort of contest than 4-H King and Queen. The 4-H King and Queen are selected in voting by all of the county 4-Hers. Achievements of the candidates rank high in the voting. Candidates are selected from among a group of 4-Hera based on high achievement and record-keeping points which are tallied in the county office. Letters are sent to those 4-Hers, asking them to participate in tiie King and Queen contest. Those wno decide to enter the contest respond affirmatively, and the final can didates are selected by a committee of the 4-H Youth Council. 8haw/Free Press Media photo THE KUHLMAN SISTERS all havet>een selected as MoHenry County 4-H Queens. Hi WASHINGTON STREET AT TBE FOOT OF MAIN STREET Hours: Monday through Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. -- 338-9149 There are six candidates for 4-H King and six candidates for 4-H Queen this year. The winners will be announced during Thursday's 4-H Night, Aug. 4, at the county fair. All the Kuhlmans have been involved in the 4-H and Hebron Helping Hands clubs for either nine or 10 years. Their mother has been a club leader for 14 years and was a member of the Future Homes 4-H Club in Cook County. They all have found their 4-H ex periences to be among their most rewar ding. 4-H has helped them develop in many ways, they say. "What ever time you invest is what you're going to get out of it," Debbie says. "I think it has helped a lot in people skills, too," Diane adds. "You meet a lot of new people." "I think my time budgeting is better," Karen says. And Sue says by the time a 4-Her is dime, a lot of record-keeping skills will have been learned. Those are important things for students who go on to college where time is short and demands are great. All the girls except Sue have attended Bradley University in Peoria after graduating from Alden-Hebron High School. Sue graduated from the Lutheran General and Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1978. Sue, 26, married former 4-Her Mark Hrodey five years ago. They have one future 4-Her, 18-month-old Kevin, and they live in Crystal Lake. Sue works part-time at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. Karen also is in her final year of the Bradley nursing program. Diane and Deb bie have gone a different route, into business. Diane, 24, received her degree in ac counting in 1981 and is employed by an ac counting firm in Chicago where she lives. Debbie, 18, is majoring in business accounting. The Kuhlmans have a 400-acre beef and grain operation on Thayer Road. They moved to McHenry County 25 years ago when their farm in the Elk Grove area was subdivided in urban expansion. m COUNTING SHEEP.
