EHas Davis and David Pollock will not be nominated or win next year a Humanitas Prize for writing a 30-minute segment of "M*A*S*H." But this year, as last year, they split the $10,000 prize for a segment of the series called "Who Knew." • The Humanitas Prize is explained by Frank Plerson, president of the Writers Guild this way: "The Emmy Award, given for commercial excellence, is symbolic: a statue. Thq Humanitas, given for recognition of the human spirit and condition, is hard cash." Two years ago, Davis and Pollock were also nomi­ nated, but didn't win, for "M*A*S*H." Other Humanitas Prizes given this year were the $15,000 award to David Milch tor writing the "Trial by Fury" episode of "Hill Street Blues." Marshall Harsko- vltz and Edward Zwlck got the top $25,000 prize in the 90 minute-or-longer category for the NBC TV-movie "Special Bulletin." When the Humanitas began nine years ago, there weren't too many entries. But as word grew about the cash awards, more people began writing stories about the human condition. Also, series like "M*A*S*H," "Lou Grant," "Hill Street Blues." "All in the Family," "Fame." "St. Elsewhere." "The White Shadow" and others have dealt humorously and humanely with the value of man. Ellwood Kaiser is the guiding force behind the Humanitas.
