•SERVING THE CHAIN-O-LAKES REGION SINCE 1875 FRIDAY. AUGUST 12. 1983 VOLUME 108 NUMBER 2 1 SECTION 20 RAGES 25 Storm Causes Property Damage In Area by Donna Bertulis The severe thunderstorm which passed through McHenry County Wednesday evening struck unusually hard in the southern edge of McHenry. The McHenry County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency is assessing the damages, and a meteorologist has been consulted to determine if the damage was caused by extremely strong winds, or in fact a "mini tornado". "From reports we received last night, it looks like McHenry got the worst end of the storm," commented John Shay, director of the ESDA. "Barry Valentine, assistant director of the ESDA, said he thinks it's initially straight line winds, but we're consulting a meteorologist on that." Strong winds caused major damages to the Shamrock Beef Cattle Farm on Draper Road, and at Lenco Electronics in Tonyan Industrial park. Both occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night, and the buildings are generally located in a straight line, which suggests to Shay that it could be the work of a tornado. At Lenco Electronics, ap proximately two thirds of the roof on the original building was blown off in the storm, while about 20 employees worked in the building. An exhaust fan and duct work dropped from the roof into the building, yet missed all the workers, said McHenry Fire Chief Glenn Peterson. "No one was injured, but the people were evacuated across the street," said the fire chief. Lenco sustained a considerable amount of damage to the interior of the building, said Company I Assistant Fire Chief Chris Bennett, in addition to water damage to equip ment and materials. Production has been temporarily discontinued at the plant. A wall which was under con struction in a new building was also knocked down at Tonyan Industrial Parte. At approximately the same time, (Contlnuod on pogm It) Seminar For City Retailers Jack Van Renterghem will present a three-hour seminar for all interested McHenry retailers this fall. Called "Buy Right, Stock Right", the seminar will be presented at the Chapel Hill Country Club Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by the McHenry Area Chamber of Com merce. Van Renterghem will speak on developing sound relations with suppliers and learning to control inventory for improved profits. This seminar will present buyer role and responsibilities, merchandise plan ning, stock control and turnover, averages and shortages, and pricing suggestions. Van Renterghem, president-owner of Northbrook Ace Hardware, suc cessfully reversed six consecutive years of business losses in his first year of management, increasing sales over 300 percent and elevating to "top 100" of 4,000 stores nationally. He has had over 20 years of successful ex perience in general management, marketing of O.E.M. and retail merchandising with profit-oriented results.
