YURKO Remember one of. the numerous mid-'50s sci-fi films where a city (usually In Japan) is attacked by a giant prehis­ toric monster? All the scien­ tists huddle together and come up with an amazing fact. The massive behemoth destroying their cities and squashing their armies is only the baby. Just wait till Mom gets here. The same happens in "Jaws 3-D," the' inevitable sequel to the original "Jaws" and the less successful "Jaws 2." The locale here is an aquatic amusement park, a sort of Dis­ neyland under water known as "Sea World."- The park is just about ready to open when one of the gates to the open sea is left ajar. Guess who's coming to dinner? Of course it's anyone's guess as to who will be dinner. ' That's th«i real suspense of a tale already twice told. The trappings may be different, the scenery a bit more exotic, but the song remains the same. Dennis Quaid and Bess Armstrong are the super-hero couple struggling against a profit-hungry park owner, their conflicting careers, and two sets of Jaws, Mom's and Junior's. Both Quaid and Miss Armstrong have done better work h^the past, but with what they are given here there's Httle chance to display their talents. The same is true of Louis Gos­ sett Jr.. an Academy Award winner last year for "ArvOfficer and a Gentleman." The most notable aspect of the film is that it's in 3-D. Not that the film is in 3-D, it's just shot in such a way as to give the illusion of depth. But for all the advances made in 3-D film­ ing (not many), it's still just a gimmick, and not a successful one. The image is still fuzzy, and the effect of objects pok­ ing out is a quick and transient thrill. It will never replace the sustained thrills that can come from the talent of a filmmaker such as Steven Spielberg, director of the original "Jaws."
