Realtors Record By Yvonne Beer, Executive Officer, McHenry County Board of Realtors Traditionally, housing is one of the best investments available. In times of high inflation and economic un certainty, home ownership has provided a safe haven for investment dollars. But the turbulent economic con ditions of the 1960s have prompted many home owners to ask if housing is still a good investment. Many wonder if the r^te of return on a home is competitive with other investments like stocks or corporate bonds. Many experts and financial analysts still believe that housing remains one of the best and safest ways to invest your money. Generally, homeowners can expect a rate of return earned from other in vestments like stocks, bonds or savings accounts. The soundness of home ownership as an investment depends on other factors besides home prices rising higher than the inflation rate. It's important to remember that a home is unique because it provides shelter as well as an investment. Thus a holme provides an "invisible" income in the form of shelter to its owner-occupant. (This "invisible" income becomes very real when it comes time to sell your home.) Therfore, a complete analysis of the investment return to homeowners must also include this inputed rental income. SUGAR -- SUGAR -- SUGAR Food processors not only use far too much sugar" in manufactured food items, they use some rather devious techniques to hide the fact from you. The law requires that the ingredient list on packaged foods list the contents In the order of quantity. The first ingredient is the one the "food" contains the most of, last listed is the least. Since manufac turers don't want you to know how often sugar is the major ingredient, they rViay use several different sugars and list each one separately. One "breakfast cereal" label was found to contain 7 different names for sugar. Protect yourself against trickery by residing the ingredient listing required on all packaged food, and by being familiar with some of the names used for sugar. Here are some names copied from various labels: Corn syrup, corn syrup solids, corn sugar, natural sugars, dextrose, maltose, mople syrOp. raisin syrup, malt syrup, molasses, grape sugar, grape s^gar solids, honey, fructose, xylitol, sorbitol, manitol, glucose, fruit sugars, natural fruit sugars, rane sugar, b**t sugar, natural and artifical sweet- ners, partially digested food starch; and of course, listed so'that you will recognize it somewhere: sugar. All refined sugars (yes, this includes honey) are to be avoided. Even if some sugars do not promote tdfeth decay, they distort body chemistry, creating imbalances and digestive by-products that must be d*toxified by the liver and kidneys. A good policy is to not buy any product in which a sugar is listed as one of the first 5 ingredients. - TIM STYLELINE Lomoriytom tlltorp out har*h glort of tho tun and reflects h--( trom tolar radtatton, permitting an ovon, ptaaaant light to enter Me window.
