TICK FEVER Two deaths, attributed to Rocky Mountain spotted fever, have been reported to the Illinois Department of Public Health this summer. A seven- year-old Madison county boy died on May 13 and a 13-year-old boy from Whiteside county died on July 18. Nine other cases of the disease have been f^orted so far this year - two in Madison county, three in Sangamon, and one each in Cumberland, Grundy, Christian and Williamson counties. PAGE 5 • PLAIN DEALER - FRIDAY, AUGUST 19.1983 Pi Alpha Chapter To Aid Saturday Recycling Drive The Pi Alpha chapter of Beta Sigma Phi will co-sponsor, with the McHenry County Defenders, the recycling drive to be held Saturday, Aug. 20, from 9 a.m. to l p.m. Since no permanent site has yeHbeen found for the drive, it will again be held at the West campus of McHenry Community High School, 4724 West Crystal Lake Road, McHenry. Beta Sigma Phi is an international cultural, social and service sorority. Each year the local chapter, Pi Alpha, participates in one of these drives in order to help finance com munity activities. " Last year, the group made a contribution to FISH, a local help to the needy jroup. They were also instrumental in bringing the Moon Rock display to McHenry. One of their projects for the coming year is to establish a library at the hospital in McHenry. This library will, of course, be moved to the new facility when it is completed, ac cording to Lynn Micklinghoff, vice- president, and Peggy Waelchli, president. Notification of a permanent location for recycling drives will be made through the newspapers, radio stations, and signs around town. Water Safety Patrol LakeFest The first annual Family Water Safety Patrol LakeFest will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, at Northwestern Military & Naval Academy, 550 S. Shore Drive on Lake Geneva. Festivities will begin at 4 p.m. and will include such fun-packed events as children's Olympic games, races, hot air balloons, parachute jumpers and a water-ski show. Entertainment will include country western bands, a rock group, dixie land bands and the Sweet Adelines. Tickets are available through the Water Safety Patrol at 414 248-4436 or at the gate. All the food you can eat, plus beer, wine and soft drinks are included in the price of a ticket. A cup of mushrooms is rich in niacin and iron, and makes a low calorie treat for the diet-conscious. f̂ OUNTY ̂NOTES VA Administers Restored Pay The Veterans Administration has been designated to administer restored benefits payments to veterans' spouses and children who lost their benefits under the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1961. Congress authorized restoration of these benefits to carry out a promise made by the military to service personnel who lata* died in or as a result of military service. The VA will pay benefits similar to those eliminated if the eligible parson is the survivor of a member or former member of the armed forces who died while on active duty prior to Aug. 13, 1961, or whose death after discharge was the result of a disability incurred in or aggravated by militaiy service before Aug. IS, 1961. ^ Eligible students should receive their restored benefits checks Aug. 1. Payments will be retroactive to January, 1963. Those eligible for parents with child-in-care benefits are expected to receive their first checks during October. Call Alzheimer Support Meeting The support group for families of patients with Alzheimer's disease or related disorders will meet Aug. 24 at 7:30p.m. at Family Alliance, Inc., 248 N. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, irreversible brain disease for which there is yet no known cause or treatment. Early symptoms include memory loss, disorientation, and diminishing in tellectual capabilities. These dementing diseases can and do strike at any adult age but tend to be more prevelent during retirement years. The problem that families face in dealing with long-term care of the patient and emotional, financial, and social stress are immense and all too often devastating. Family support groups being organized throughout the nation offer a caring situation where family members share their problems and seek solutions together.
