I've seen a lot of "wild" young people in my lifetime but, for the most part, they have all come to a realization of truth and mend ed their ways. I may have fo und the exception, but tell me I'm wrong. Dad Dear Dad: Sometimes, it takes longer. We've all seen "hopeless" cases before and, more than once, those who take the longest time to straighten up get their lives into the beSt order. The key is one's ability to learn from mistakes and, sometimes, of equal import ance is the help and assis tance received from family and friends. Dear Colleen: Why do parents think they have the right to make their children play the role of a good neighbor? Even' time someone my age visits rela tives who happen to be fri ends of the family, I wind up taking care of them. 1 have to introduce them to all my friends, take them with me when I go out at night, or I am urged to call and invite them over for dinner, and this and that. I have a life of my own to lead and I don't think it's fair. Sammy Dear Sammy: Your parents are right in asking you to make the visit ors welcome. They should not expect you to spend all of your time with them. A family conference is in order. RECIPE By Sarah Anne Sherdan The ment of Public proud of the job our pesticides and vector control inspectors do on the state fairgrounds. Even in the dairy and horse barns, flies and mosquitoes are kept to a minimum. How is this achieved? First of all, by having a commercial pesticide control company go to the fair about a week before it opens and spray the livestock barns and other structures, especially the ceilings, rafters and beams of bains and hanging light cords. Flies seek heights at night. If you wore to look at the inside upper sections of barns at night, you would know why flies aren't as much of a nuisance after dark. They're - - up there resting. The manure-filled straw in the floorbed of l ivestock trucks 'presents another problem. As soon as possible after the animals are unloaded, the trucks are segregated in an isolated area and sprayed. Also, a corn- pan; straw out of the every day while the animals are at the fair. There are usually a couple of state health inspectors on the grounds day and night keeping a close vigilance on insects around food establish ments. Before the fair begins, the sanitation engineers plan certain routes to be covered each day for a visual fly count. That is, if they find maybe one fly at a food concessioner's stand, they won't be too concerned but they'll check that stand again. If on some other day they find eight or nine flies, they will recommend that the area be treated again. This treatment also is done under contract with a private pest control business. An extensive amount of work is carried out at night and during the early morning hours because this is the ideaL period to clean up tm| grounds. We make sure that food concessioners have cleaned up properly by using a bleach solution to sanitize the counters and equipment. And we check to see if they are keeping their garbage in insect-proof plastic Hie Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission will hold two public hearings to receive comments regarding the 1981 Plan Update of the Year 2000 Transportation System Development Plan. Bid Letting For Roads w* county road projects were included among those received by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) as part of the state road nrooram. Bids totating|113.8 million for'276 road improvement projects throughout the state were received from the July 27 bid letting. According to IDOT officials, this was the largest bid letting in state history and was made possible by new federal and state revenues. The next step is to award the projects and start construction so that work is virtually completed by the end nf the con struction season. The apparent low bidden for the three county projects are: Glaze Construction, Algonquin, for a 8289,000 (estimated cost) resurfacing of 2.08 miles of Route 14, from Dole avenue to McHenry road in Crystal Lake; and on Route 31, from the McHenry-Kane county line to Gary- Algonquin road. , Also, the apparent low bidder for the 8172,000 (estimated cost) resur facing of Route 120, from Sunset Ridge drive to Main street, Wood stock, was Peter Baker k Son, Co., Lake Bluff. Look around the ground area of the stand. The owner can put up a flashy, eye catching front, but if you look beyond that, you might find that the place is really an eyesore. Pay particular at tention to the garbage storage area. Is there any sign of leakage around the dumpsters? Are they tightly closed? Is other refuse bagged in insect-proof bags? Look at the em ployees. Are they wearing clean clothing? Are their hands and fingernails clean? Are they wearing hair restraints?
