UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK PAGE % - PLA1NPEALER - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24,1983 The McHenry Plaindealer There Is Hope For Baseball's The success the first-year Johnsburg Tigers experienced this past summer leaves much hope for baseball returning to the McHenry area for good Winning a league title will always stir up at least some interest. But the road to repectibility is a long one. The Northern Illinois Baseball league is far from being considered a strong and competitive league. But league official know it. Rome wasn't built in two years, nor will the NIBL. The league ended its season with only three clubs whb could field a team. That's the bad news, but the good news was Johnsburg is one of those teams. If the league flourishes, Johnsburg will be one of the reasons. Johnsburg's manager, Jim Herman, is now the new league president. He brings into the league a lot of ideas and energy, which a new organization needs to surviVe. Herman spoke with confidence when he announced two established teams have expressed great interest in joining the NIBL, Delavan and Barrington. Delavan played in the Sycamore League and Barrington in the North Snore League That would give the NIBL five established teams. One more team would make a solid six- team league. Right now though, the most important thing Herman and his Johnsburg Tigers could do, along with the league, is to create as much interest as possible among area baseball talent. I used the word blooper to describe a ball hit by Ken Stanek to win the ball game. It read, Herman knows that. His key objective is to "Stanek's Blooper Sends Resurrected convince some of the good players who played Johnsburg Tigers NIBL Title. on the American Legion teams in the area, What it did was give me a lesson on the along with the various high school teams to different meanings of descriptive words used tryout heavily in sportswriting. One says, "a foolish or stupid mistake; blunder." Number two says, "a ball batted up in a low arc so that it falls between the infield and the outfield, usually for a hit." I guess it all depends how you write it and read it. One thing is for certain, I'll be careful the next time I use the word blooper. How about those White Sent? They have surprised a lot of people and made several columnists eat their words. I'm one of those columnists. I picked the White Sox to finish third in the Western Division in a column at the beginning of the baseball season. It would take a complete collapse by the Sox to make that prediction come through. Along with the winning comes respectibility. Respect the White Sox didn't have at the beginning. In litany ways the SOx are like the Brewers a couple years ago. The first year under George Bamberger and a winning season created some renect for the Brewers, but never considered by the so-called experts as the real division contender. It wasn't until the Brewers won the Qastern Division title and made it all the way to the World Series last year did the experts really respect the Brewers, when the 1983 season begem, the Brewers were the most feared team in the American League. The White Sox should have no problem winning the west, and in turn, win a little respect in the major leagues. The chance to spe^'with and watch James 'Quick' Tillis work out last week was one of the great moments of my sportswriting career. It was my first experience with a heavyweight contender. But it wasn't just that, it was his personality and the sense of dominance soit out in the air. He reminded me a lot of Muhammad Ali. He had many quick one-liners, a trademark of Ali. One of His was, "I'm just not going to beat him, I'm going to crucify him." As we stood in that horse barn, all eyes were mi Tillis as he did a number on the speed bag and jumped rope. Whenever he said anything, nobody seemed to argue with him. win during the last game of the season might seem small on paper, but it was a vocal crowd and enthusiastic. Softball is always going to be a thorn in the side, beccase of its convenience. But all the Tigers need is the players dedicated to baseball ajiq love baseball 1 ^ It kind of irked Herman a bit that a few of his players missed the last game of the season with Algonquin because of Softball. I guess you can chalk it up to growing pains. But the Johnsburg, McHenry area is big enough to field a talented baseball team. The whole area has the baseball talent to field a very good league. Only time will tell, but the NIBL should ihake it. ***** A couple of readers took great offense to my story on the Tigers winning the NIBL title, particulary the headline.
