Over much of the country, air conditioners are providing relief from the summer heat. But an air conditioner isn't the only way to beat the heat. Did you know a whole house or attic fan also can help co(A your home? By providing ven tilation, whole house fans can help keep you comfortable at a fraction of the cost of central air conditioning. According to a recent article in the Boston Globe, attic fans are enjoying a revival due to the high costs of energy. 1 How does whole-house ventilation translate into whole-house cooling? Firsts a large three-or-four-bladed fan with a diameter of 20 to 36 inches is installed in the attic flow, in a entral part of the Conklin, Kathleen Dasing, .Joan Althoff, and Neida Rechisky, McHenry; Rita Groff, Harriet Bell, Lorraine Henely, and Hazel Cavins, all of Wonder Lake. The amount of air through the house depends on the number of windows open. The more you open, the more air moves through. However, if you keep only a few windows open, air will move faster and create a breeze-like effect. When installing a whole house fan, two essential questions should be answered: (1) What fan size should be used? (2) What type of exhaust ventilation is necessary? The McHenry County Board of Realtors suggests you call a local dealer to advise you on exactly the right size fan and exhaust ventilation you need according to your home's particular dimensions.
