And. in Illinois, drunk drivers are involved in more than half of the fatal auto accidents. But now m are facing a new menace- that of the driver impaired by drugs other than alcohol. and more Americans are taking drugs, both legal and illegal, and as drug use increases, the number of traffic accidents involving drugged drivers increases similarly. The state health department is involved with drunk or ' drivers in two ways. Illinois' Implied Consent Law, which was firtt enacted in 1972, we were given the responsibility for administering the law. IWs law states that when a person is issued a license to operate a car or truck, or any other motor vehicle in Illinois, he or she agrees to submit to the required chemical tests if he or she is arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol. < In 1982, that law was amended to include drugs other than alcohol. Hie amendment also Sve law enforcement officers e right to decide which chemical test, or tests, would be given-blood, breath or urine. This modification in the law was necessary because drugged range. expanded and toughened in oroer to keep the drugged driver from slipping through the criminal Justice system. Most of 1 Remembering When Dentistry 70 years ago DR. F.J. AICHER After graduating from dental college in 1913, Dr. F.J. Aicher ' his office on the second >r of the building now occupied as McHenry Drapery on the west side of Green street. Many people are still living in this community who remember the climb up those stairs with all the trepidations common to a visit to the dentist. For those who may not date back to those earlier days, some will remember when Dr. Murphy, Sr., followed by Dr. Larry Murphy took over the office after Dr. Aicher's untimely death. Then came Dr. James McMahon when Dr. Murphy entered military service. .A motto which hung on the wall in Dr. Aicher's time can now be found in the same office. It reads: The Sun is always Shinin' If you can't see it Jest clean up An' look again H.H. Leonard tests the drugs we find are prescription drugs; so they could be called "legal" drugs. But, in many cases, they are obtained illegally. Alcohol, of course, is clearfy the number one drug of abuse. Of the legal, or prescribed drugs, we're finding barbiturates, or sedatives, are the most common, especially amobarbital, phenobarbital and secobarbital. Large amounts of tranquilizers, such as librium or valium, along with their metabolites, are also being used. The other legal drugs of abuse which are showing up in our are quaaludies and rl, which are sedatives; t, which is codeine; and Doriden, a morphine substitute dispensed legally by many small clinics. Many people believe that if they're taking a prescription drug that can make them drowsy or affect their driving in some way, they are not guilty of breaking the law. But they are. The same is true if they are taking an over-the-counter drug, such as antilnstimine, or a sleeping aid. It's illegal to drive while you are under the influence of any drug /that can affect your driving, even if it is a drug prescribed by your physician Those notices on some prescriptions and over-the- counter drugs that warn you not to drive while you're taking the medication are there for a purpose. And those notices should be heeded.
