After 12 o'clock Mass on Sunday, we usually take off for a ride on an uncharted course. Somehow, the course always leads to a place where they serve food. Last Sunday we decided to get a lunch near home, then tour out to Royal Terrace to visit old friends. That place was buzzing with activity like Grand Central Station. So I Hear Q by Earl Walsh FOOTBALL CAN BE A BALL AT I0P DECK 1232 N. GREEN ST. McHENRY, ILL. 385-9836 I IW It was Mrs. Fred (Ames) Bienapfl's 90th birthday. Their she sat, as sweet as ever, with a flock of relatives and friends in the chapel room. who may not know, Agnes was one of the Tesch family who lived in the quaint little home which is now the site of the McHenry Library. On the other side of the room was another girl we planned to visit, Grandma Shober. Grandma was surrounded by grandchildren with admiring eyes for this 92 year old lady. It was long, long ago that the Shobers served the hungry and thirsty. Mrs. Shober was famous for good food, turtle soup being a special item people drove miles to enjoy. Any of us should be so sharp at 92 years as this fine lady. Saw Joe Weber briefly. Not the same husky Joe we Knew, but that famous Weber smile was as big as ever. Ellen Schneider (known as Helen) was sleeping so we tip toed out of the room. Will have to see her our next trip. Alvina's first cousin, Mrs. Joe (Martha Hettermann) Freund was wheeling around and looking good. It was nice to see all those old friends. Hope that people will come to see me if I ever need the care so cheerfully given at Royal Terrace. As fen- Sunday, I thanked God that I could complete my visit and leave under my own power. Front St., McHenry driving through town early one morning -- AJvina in the back seat. Any explanation would have been useless. We were happy to be there when Mr. and Mrs. George Riley celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Mass Sunday. You should have seen those two step it off as they walked down the aisle to bring the gifts to tye altar. We concluded they must have taken their first walk to the altar at a very young age. Alice Peet let us read a scrapbook kept by ber mother. It covers a lot of Ringwood history. The first picture we saw in the book was of Sam Brown, Postmaster and drug store owner. He was a real fixture in that little village. Now and then we drove up to Brown's Drug Store to enjoy his famous chocolate sodas. Next we saw a picture of the late Mrs. BenWalkington. There was a nice lady in my book. Most of th$ space in the book took up obituaries. Now, obituaries in those former days were not short. They covered a lot of a person's life. Dr. Hepburn, a beloved country doctor, ushered many babies into this world and kept them well as they grew up. I was in Dr. Hepburn's office one time, sitting in the waiting room, when a woman was leaving his private room. When asked how much she owed him, he scratched his head and said, "With that medicine, I'll have to charge you 50 today." As Georgie Gobel wc "They don t hardly make kind no more". From the long list, 'Twould seem Ringwood could have been named Harrisonville. We found a write-up on the marriage of Ed Hayes and Edith Whiting. * Ray McGee and Lanette Whiting were the attendants. The name Ed Hayes always brings happy memories to me. No man was ever kinder to a boy than Ed Hayes was to me. Mr. and Mrs. James Ladd celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1927. How well I remember Jim Ladd at farm sales. He was a shrewd buyer. Here's a note on the marriage of Lyle Hopper and Lillian Smith. It doesn't give the year, but my guess is they hardly had time to put away their high school diplomas before they tied the knot Lyle and Lillian took a trip to Niagara Falls, so says the report. the report gave them quite a sendoff: ' "Both are charming young people who have countless friends who join in wishing them a abundance of health and prosperity in their wedded life." as usual the report described the bride's attire. Nothing about the groom. ^ - Whoops! Here is a report on the 4'Benoy-Walkington Nuptials". Paul and Altnea Walkington are known to all as one of Ringwood's nicest couples. . Marie Yegge, who was our Girl Friday, proof reader, Assistant Sports Editor, and spelling teacher, phoned to let me known Vernon Kays was mentioned in the Chicago Tribune during the playoff games. Vern is a White Sox fan from way back. One thing showing recovery in this country is the ratio of marriage licenses to divorces.
