County detox center may open June, '84 I'AUK 13 - Pl,AINDKALER - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER It, IM Cliff Wait! w-Free Press News Service WOODSTOCK- Memorial Hospital for McHenry County is targeting June 1984 as a possible date for the opening of a detoxification center to aid drug and alcohol abusers in McHenry County, according to Hospital Director Lee Pesce. But before a center could begin aiding victims of drug and alcohol abuse, Pesce saia the hospital must go through a lengthy process of review and public hearings before the » Illinois Health Facilities and Planning Board, which has to approve the project. * i -• j •* Memorial proposes a 14-bed, in-patient unit which would be the first of its kind in McHenry County. The unit, which would be located on the fourth floor of the hospital, would consist of four "swing beds" where patients who are kicking the L physical habit would be stationed. The other 10 beds would house patients trying to work out the psychological causes of endency, Pesce said. _iveral other county institutions have tried to receive support for similar centers. Pesce said Memorial has received the support of both McHenry Hospital and Harvard Community Memorial Hospital. The director said there are several advantages to housing the center at Memorial. One is that the hospital actually has the necessary space in the building, he said. Space opened up because the mental health unit is moving to the third floor of the hospital to take over a spot vacated by the physical therapy department, which relocated to the new south wing of the hospital. Another factor is the availability of a support network, Pesce noted, explaining the detox center will work closely with the Family Services and Community Mental Health Center to provide a support network for the families of substance abusers. Since the center is for McHenry County residents, Woodstock's geographic location in the center of the county is ideal, Pesce said. The center also would be a not- for-profit agency, thus making its services more affordable to the average person and making it available to help indigents on a limited basis, he said, adding that any profit from the can be put back into program. "I think we'll get a pretty good cross section," Pesce said. But Pesce said a great deal of the details have not been worked out yet because approval for the project must be received first. The hospital just recently filed a certificate of need for the project. Pesce said the next is a review by the He Systems Agency of Kane, Lake and McHenry Counties in November. Approval for the project could come in December, Pesce nqfced. allowing the hospital to start redecorating and preparing for a possible June 1984 opening Keeping Healthy: Looking toward flu season We've survived a sweltering summer, but, recently, cool air from Canada arrived to remind , • us of the winter ahead. In a recent column we talked of the ft importance of influenza it vaccinations for anyone in the "high-risk" group, but they aren't the only ones who get flu. <• You may be 21, hale and nardy, li and still be invaded by the influenza virus. What are the symptoms of influenza, and how do you care for yourself if you get it? Influenza develops fast after you've been exposed - within only one to three days - and when the symptoms strike, they usually come on rapidly. If you're the victim, the first thing you'll notice is that you're feeling chilled, or that you have a headache and muscular aches and weakness.. A backache is a common symptom, and most people lose their appetite. You can usually tell whether what you're coming down with is a bad cold or influenza, because, if you have flu, your temperature will climb rapidly during the first day of symptoms - usually to 101 or 102. Tiien it reaches a peak, probably not higher than 103. As a rule, it goes down graduallyover a few aays, but it may drop quickly only to rise again on the third dav. Ordinarily, the fever only lasts about three days, but it may go on for as long as a week. As your temperature dro^j, you'll probably notice stuffiness in your nose, and you may develop a cough. But, once you've reached this stage, you are probably on your way to recovery. . Symptoms of influenza do not include cramps, v< diarrhea. These are of what is commonly called "intestinal or stomach flu". Uiis illness is caused by a virus, too, but not one of the viruses in the influenza group. When many people around you are becoming sick with influenza and the air is laden with viruses, it's almost impossible to avoid getting in the path of a few coughs and sneezes. However, there are a few sensible .precautions you can take. You can keep up your resistance by gefrftig plenty of rest and eating regular, well- balanced meals. And, for the short duration of an influenza outbreak, you would be wise to stay out of crowds as much as possible. If someone in your family has influenza, keep his or her dishes and towels separate from the rest of the family's. The sick person should cover his Qoughs and sneezes with paper tissues and drop them at once into a paper bag which should be replaced frequently. Most doctors recommend bed rest for the treatment of influenza. Aspirin will help ease the pain and bring down the fever. It also helps to drink a lot of fluids if your fever is high. k •• general News The project will have an annual budget of around 1300,000, he said. Although Pesce said he hasn't even begun to thing about staff or a director, yet he said a detoxification center has special needs. - "It needs to be a staff that has nad experience or will need special training," he said. The nearest centers that deal with chemical dependency on an in-patient level are in Waukegan and Elgin, so a center of this type is needed in McHenry, Pesce said. He explained that the entire family often has a role to play in rehabilitation of the abuser, and an in-county facility with a support network of tne Family Services group --a group Pesce called "first rate,"--would greatly aid someone suffering from chemical dependency. tt Rape and Sexual Abuse The Northeastern Division of the Illinois Association of School Nurses will hold its fall meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Fisherman's Inn in Elburn. Cocktails will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. The topic will be "Rape and Sexual Abuse". Speakers will be Ms. Helen Savage, director of social services at &ood Shepherd Hospital and Arthur Walker, chief of investigations of Lake County State's Attorney's office.
