Tulips, daffodils, crocus, hyacinths, muscari (grape hyacinths), and dwarf iris are among the more popular spring flowering bulbs for this area. All can be planted in October. , Tulips are perhaps the most popular spring flower for homeowners. They can be classified according to type, variety, or species. Tulips range in height from 3 inches to over 3 feet, and are available in a wide variety of colors and several flower types. Some bloom earlier than others, thus with a little planning before planting, it is possible to nave color for most of the spring. PEOPLE As a general rule, the earlier the tulip blooms the lower the plant will be when it flowers. Some of the earliest blooming varieties include Tulipa greigii, Kaufmanniana, fosteriana, tarda, praestans, and eichleri. All of these are specific species of tuliDS. Kaufmanniana tulips only get 4 to 8 inches tall, thus are excellent for rock gardens. Their flowers resemble water lilies. Fosteriana tulips get up to 20 inches in height, and can produce large flowers. Types of tulips which flower later in the spring include Lily- flowered, Darwin, Parrot, Cottage, and Double Late. As the name implies, Lily-flowered tulips resemble lilies in that their .petals curve outward to form a bellshaped flower. Darwin tulips get very tall, producing large flowers (as wide as they are deep) late in sprine. Twisted petals with ruffled edges are the main feature of the late flowering Parrot tulips. Cottage tulips develop deep flowers on long stems. Double tulips will have 2 or more rows of petals, with Double Early flowering sooner than Double Late, Tulips can be planted throughout October into early November. Plant them 4 to 5 inches deep, depending on what type or species. Early bloomers should be planted shallower than late blooming tulips. Space tulips about 6 to 12 inches apart. It is best to plant tulips in clumps or groups of at least 8 or 10 to get optimum effects in the landscape. Additionally, it is recommended to keep identical varieties together rather than mixing varieties within a clump. With all types of bulbs, pick out healthy, non-injured bulbs and keep them cool and dry until Planting time. Break up the soil efore planting, and add an all purpose fertilizer (such as 5-10- • 10). Follow the directions on the package for the recommended planting depth of the variety. After planting, the bulbs will send out roots and probably a small shoot, but will not emerge throught the soil. They will go ? dormant after this initial growth until the warming conditions and lengthening days of next spring. Finally, after the soil freezes to a depth of a few inches, it is beneficial to mulch the soil to avoid freezing and thawing cycles, which can injure underground bulbs. Remove mulches early in spring.,~| -- Tulips' will usually produce favorable flowers for about 3 years. After this, flowers will generally become smaller or may not be produced at, all. They should then be dug up and discarded, as replanted bulbs usually are unproductive. It is best to plant new bulbs for optimum results. 25% OFF CORDUROY SLACKS Reg.29.00. Ms. Lee. 8-18.
