They are (left to right); Tom Neuman, Chris Vehring, Ken Lang, Bob Gende, Brian Smjth, Ross Vehring and coach Chuck Cud£. Meet Mr. October of McHenry golf - Chris Vehring. While October is the month &f the World Series, October is also the month of post season high School golf in Illinois. You either play your best golf in October, or its time to store the golf clubs in the closet for the winter. Vehring has played some of his best golf over the last two vears in October. His steady golf helped the Warriors advance into the stcie meet last year where he shot a 152 for seventh medalist. This season, while his teammates where having difficulties at the Fox Valley meet and regionals, Vehring carded respectable scores to help keep the Warrior squad alive. _ At the FVC meet, the Chris Vehring ATHLETE of the week senior shot 82 to tie team mate Tom Neuman* for top Warrior honors. At regionals, Vehring shot a 78, tops on the Warrior squads and good for fourth medalist. That score also officially qualified him individualy for the sectionals meet. Tuesday, Vehring shot a 76 at sectionals as the Warrior squad qualified for the state meet. He is the only Warrior able to qualify for the state meet as an individual. "At sectionals I was hitting the ball well, and I knew the rest of the team was scorin well. We just did it when counted," said Vehring. This is Vehring's second trip down to Peoria's Kellogg Country Club and his last chance. "I'm hoping we win it and (Continued on pago 19) Consistency has been a trademark of Tom Neuman" in 1983. His steady golf this season has earned him the respect of being one of the better golfers in the McHenry County area, if not in the state. Neuman": continued that consistency with a team leading 75 at Pinecrest Country Club in Huntle Now Neuman is fn his second straight Illinois High School Association state tournament. He gives most of the credit of this years success to McHenry Country Club professional Dbn Habjan. "I wouldn't be here if it weren't for his help," said Neuman. Habjan has been working with Neuman* all season long. Neuman, who was riding Tom Neuman ATHLETE of the week a small slump going into sectionals, was very nappy with the 75. "Everything just fell together. I really feel con fident now and feel real great," said Neuman. Like Chris Vehring, this will be Neuman's second and last chance down at Kellogg. Last year Neuman*. shot a 157 to help the Warriors to second place. This time around, Vehring would like to accomplish several things. One, he is hoping for a team state title and he would also like to do well individually. With those t w o a c c o m p l i s h m e n t s , Neuman wants to make a good showing for the many collegiate scouts in at tendance. The Warriors qualfied for the state tourney by placing second in the Crown-Dundee sectional held at Pinecrest Country Club in Huntley Tuesday. Rockford-Guilfora, the top rated golf team in the state, won the sectional title with 308 score. McHenry scored 311. McHenry and Rockford- Guilford will join Aurora Marmion (320), Wheaton North (319), Springfield (313), Edwardsville 314, Moline 314, Danville 316, St. Viator of Arlington Heights (309)* Deerfield (310), Lock- port (324) and Joliet (326) for the quest for the class AA title. "I'm really happy. The kids really came through," said Warrior coach Chuck Cuda. "It went down to the wire all the way. We shot a good game at 311." Chuck Cuda and his squad now has a chance to complete what they had set out to do last year - win the class AA title. The Warriors finished second to champion New Trier in 1982 613 to 619. New Trier was bumped out of post-season play in the regionals. Surprisingly, Crystal Lake South finished a distant seventh in the sectional meet. The Gators had beaten the Warriors in the Fox ^Valley Conference meet and in the regionals, also held at Pinecrest. Crown-Dundee, who had edged out McHenry for second place in the FVC meet and tied them at regionals, was ninth. The Warriors placed ahead of South and Crown-Dundee, while qualifying for state,, by fulfilling what Cuda ha# been saying since the conference meet - all four golfers have to shoot to their capabilities. Tom Neuman, who shot 81 at the regionals, came through with a 75, while Chris Vehring was next with 76. Bob Gende, however, was robablythe main difference ig a 77. It was the first time this season three Warriors shot in the 70's in the post-season. Hi Cuda was especially happy with Neuman's play. Tne senior was in a bit of slump. "He was fired up.„ He wanted to let everybody know he is one of the better golfers in the state." "Vehring was only four over par. He's been a good shooter for us," Cuda said. Although Neuman's 75 was tops among all golfers, his score could not be con sidered a medalist or an individual qualifyer for the state meet. New IHSA rules has only those making medalist honors at regionals can retain those honors at sectionals. - Vehring's 76 placed him in the fourth medalist position. His 78 at regionals qualfied him for medalist honors at the sectionals. Barry Lindhart of Rockford- Guilford ended up as the top medalist with a 75. Vehring was tied with three other golfers at 76. Grant Halverson, also of Rocfcford-Guilford, won second on the first hole of the playoffs. Kevin Rafferty of Carmel took third after two holes, with Vehring over taking Shawn Larson of Crown-Dundee for fourth. The rest of the team scoring is as follows; DeKalb 312, Carmel 312, Rockford East 315, Lake Forest 319, Crystal Lake South 322, Antioch 324 and Dundee- Crown 333. The Warriors left Wed nesday at 2:30 p.m. for Peoria. Cuda said the squad planned to play a practice round at Kellogg Thursday. Tournament play will start on Friday with 18 holes and finish Saturday with 18 more holes. "There is onlv 12 teams left now," said Cuaa. "Rockford- Guilford was rated number one and we finished only three strokes behind them. If we can shoot 310 the first day, we can be right in there." Cuda expects a wide open race. (Continwod on pogo 19) I Ken and Lang Smith followed Brian with respectable 83's. Ross Vehring closed out the squad scoring with a 87. "That's the best he's done all year," said Cuda on Gende. "We really came through with Lang's 83. If Lang could have come up with a 78 or 79 we would have won the sectional." BTAPP PHOTO-WAYNE GA YLORD Chris Vehring makes a chip shot during the second round of the sectional golf tournament Tuesday at Pinecrest Country Club in Huntley. He shot a 76, second best on the Warrior team.
