Phil Crane took a tough stand on the economy, Central America and a recent _ in Woodstock. Crane's appearance, which was attended by 20 people, was more an informal question and answer session, allowing con stituents to ask the congressman anything that happened to be on their minds. However, Crane opened the meeting with a statement on a tax bill pending in the House Ways ana Means Committee. He made a plea that an amendment to the lull which he sponsored, on indexing the tax code, not be cut. He said indexing would ease the tax burden on "the little guy," who bears the brunt of tax increases. 4, "If we have to raise taxes, the elected representatives of the people have to be up-front about it," Crane said. During the question session, Crane said the United States should support Afghan rebels in their fight against the Soviet Union by supplying arms and other materials. Crane quoted figures which said it takes 10 conventional io tie up one guerrilla „ If the Afghan rebels Id 100,000 men, the would have to have one troops, which would be "staggering cost for the Soviet Union, he said. The principle area of interest for the ui>. should be in Central America, he said. According to Crane, the U.S. should impose an air and sea quarantine on Nicaragua until real elections are held there, he said, adding the U.S. should try to isolate Cuba, which he described as the "primary conduit" for trouble in the region. The Monroe Doctrine, which warns against foreign interference in the Western Hemisphere, should be reasserted, he said. Crane, who has visited Central America on several occasions, said relatively unsophisticated Salvadoran terrorists could be run out of the country in a month if U.S. Special Forces were allowed to go after them. He also said he did not hold much hope for the Kissinger Commission to solve problems in Central America. "I trust Henry Kissinger as far ai I can throw this high school/' Crane commented. • The comments started a sharp exchange « between the congressman and a woman in the audience, who said the CIA and the U.S. are practicing expansionism and that the Sandinista government is the duly-elected Dody in Nicaragua. The CIA has supported anti- Sandinista rebels. <"I don't think you've done homework," Crane told jr. If a child wants to go trick or treating there are certain precautions a parent can take to make sure Halloween stays safe and enjoyable, said Sharon Gamache, home safety specialist of the National Safety Council. "An obvious area of concern is the treats that a child receives," Gamache said. "Parents shoul examine treats before a child eats them. Look for an suspicious, such as a broken or a wrapper that is loose. If you have any reason to believe that an item has been tampered with, don't allow your child to have the candy. "If your child receives a piece of fruit for a treat, wash and slice it into small pieces and check for inedible additions. It's also a good idea to give children a meal or snack before they trick or treat. Thev'U be likely to eat treats if tl to they have fill their had something stomachs. One way to prevent children from eating candy before it has been inspected is to accompany them on their Halloween visits, she said. "Young children should be supervised by an adult," she said. "An adult can keep track d\ of the homes children visit and id the treats they receive. An adult - can also guide children fn. crossing streets and make sure that youngsters don't stray too far from the immediate neigh borhood. "OLder children usually prefer to travel with friends, but parents should discuss certain safety rules with them before the children leave." Here are some of the tips that she recommends: 1 • Trick or treat only in BULL VALLEY BEEF T. •T 131 CENTER STREET GRAYSLAKE, ILLINOIS 60030 Phone: (312) 223-4455 n lb. * Boneless Chuck --*1.39 it». * Sirloin Tip Roast *2.38 ib. * Bone-In Round Roasi *1.99 it». * Ground Beef *1.64 n». If there art no sidewalks, walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic. "To be on the safe side," Gamache said, "small children should trick or treat while it is still light outside. Some other Halloween activity such as having a costume party, visiting a haunted house, or renting a home movie can be held during the evening. - "If you live in a rural com munity or in an area that is not well-lighted and you allow older children to trick or treat during the evening, have them carry flashlights and wear light- colorea outfits or use reflective on the costumes. Children follow this advice will see better, but more importantly, they will become more visible to motorists." t - 'i Another concern on jweeen is the costume that Id wears. "CMkfre îhould be able to see properly without any visual obstructions," she said. "A painted face and a hat that is worn properly will not obstruct a child's visiion. If you choose to allow your child to wear a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough for a child to see clearly. Enlarge the holes if they are too small This will help prevent falls on stairs and it will allow children to see where they're going." Children should also wear costumes that are made of flame resistant materials whenever possible. . Com fortable, well-fitted shoes are strongly recommended. "It's not smart," Gamache said, "to allow a girl who dresses like a fairy princess to wear mother's high heels." The Red Rose* Collection of "Ahhhs?
