Yes, hardship is the right word. Of course In the 1920 s and 1930's people didn't miss their electric Drives, television sets or clothes dryers like we would miss them if they were taken away today. As a society we have come to depend upon these convenient "necessities". Our parents, and such didn't what they were missing. With every advance in technology comes a tradeoff. With our use of appliances we save time but become dependent upon the electricity or gas used to power the appliance and the service it provides. Often we tend to lose track of the skills we had before the appliance entered our lives. Close to 9 percent of the energy used in this country goes into running our appliances. To give a better idea of what electricity costs a family, I called my local electric company and they supplied the following figures based on an average cost of .04 cents per kilowatt hour: Appliance Color Tele Television tubetype solid state Radio Electric Range with Oven Electric: Room Air < Water Heater Pan . tioner (12cu.ft.) <aiick recovery Refrigerator (12 < frostless (12cu. ft.) Naturally each household's use will vary but the above listing is intended to give a rough idea of average use and JUst as an afterthought, let me share some suggestions that were given to me as I was researching tht« article: 1 - A flow restrictor in your shower head can cut down your water use by up to four gallons a minute, thus cutting down on the use of the water heater. 2- Appliances that are not in good working order waste money. Try this: take a piece of paper and close the refrigerator door on it. Tf you can pull the paper out easily, the rubber sealing gasket needs replacing. 3 - Avoid opening the oven door as much as possible when baking. Evenr time it is opened, you lose 25 degrees. Many things can be done to save money by reducing appliance use. Perhaps the first thing to look for when appliance is its Efficiency Rating. _ a tag on the appliance ask the dealer about , the energy use of the appliance. naps me nrsi len buying an its Energy If there isn't If you don't find the sewing machine you need here..At hasn 7 been made!
