OCTOBER 2t, 1983 i ffygeneral̂ ^™ news Defenders plan fen day Appreciation Days were designated to call attention to On Wednesday, Oct. 26, McHenry County Defenders will feature the beautiful slides from the Spring Hill Farm Fen in Lake in the Hills. These slides highlight the natural beauty of this picturesque dry gravel prairie and unusual, alkaline wetland. The Illinois Nature Preserves Commission calls it "one of the most significant natural areas in northern Illinois." The showings are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Defenders' office located in the Central Elementary School, 131 E. Paddock street, Crystal Lake. Members of the Defenders' Save the Fen Committee will be present for the 45-minute program to discuss the issue. Tne Defenders recently red two Fen Appreciation lys at the Spring Hill Farm Fen which were attended by more than 300 people. The the need to preserve the area and to create awareness of site damage caused by misuse by off-road vehicles. Presently, the Defenders and the Nature Conservancy are negotiating ^ agreement with Material Service Corporation that will provide volunteers with limited access to the site to undertake management activities such as brusn cutting and a prescribed bum. This agreement hopefully will be completed within the very near future so that work can begin before the fall is over. The public is invited to attend the slide program. Refreshments will be served at each showing. For the 9:30 a.m. showing, babysitting will be offered for a modest fee at Marylee Rogers' home at 94 Pomeroy Avenue. For additional information, call the Defenders' office at 815-459-0450. On the lighter side: the following classified ad recently ran in a magazine. "Wife or dog must go.
