Baber frequently deals with the survivors, and their fears and emotions. "I don't you do learn to accept it," he said. His job is to provide that confidence. Baber began the group Survivors of Suicide in the county as a means to this end. But the group does not address the deep, personal fueling a shocked wife may keep trapped inside. For that individual counseling with a professional often is required, Baber said. Baber has been a counselor and therapist with MCYSB for 1 year and holds a Community Mental Health Center for McHenry County. "These people are men tally stable; sensitive," Baber said, "they're just hurting and they need somewnere to turn. They're not running around with loaded guns to their head. You don't have to walk on eggshells around them." aber acknowledges he th.f reassures them symptoms they are ex periencing are very normal. "There's no mystery to it all," he said. Baber said the most common symptoms are: isolation; confusion of past, present and future; reoc- current dreams: mood swings; unexplainable fears; hearing voices; ritualistic ceremonies and psycho- kinetic experiences. Other common examples of behavior would be talking to the person as though they are there, or seeing visions of the dead person. "I reassure them of their sanity,'* Baber said. Through experience he can guess their feelings before they're told. "You can just see," Baber said. "It's like a burden g lifted from 4heir shoulders. They're given permission to be normal." Survivors must learn to cope with their guilt feelings and get on with their lives, Baber said. Rather than embracing the attitude of "what did I do to cause this," Baber emphasizes what the person did to keep the person alive as long as ne was. "I always try to use the rest of the family members as support systems." Baber said. Tney help in dispelling a common fear that sOmehow suicide isr inherent, Baber raid, 7fr " "It becomes almost an obsession," Baber said. "I start them thinking that the individual does have choice." Based on research from the Suicide Information Center iB San Diego, Calif., Baber said there are between 100,000 to 150,000 suicides per Iear in the. United States, [any are diagnosed incorrectly, he said. According to the center, about 80 cent of all people attemi suicide do not leave notes. McHenry County is not immune from the problem. Marlene A. Lantx, chief deputy coroner for the county, reported that from December 1981 to November 1982 there were 19 confirmed suicides. .Steven were men,-- three were teenagers. So far this year, there are 14 confirmed cases - seven male. "We had no one under 21 years old," Baber said. He credited the decline to a good mental health program in the county, an upturn economy and luck. "But we're happy wi| luck," Baber said. Warning signs are un s u c c e s s f u l a t t e m p t s , threatening statements and "tying up of loose ends," Baber added.
