I* \«SK 22 • IMiAINDEALKH - FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 4.1M3 let's talk City Council changes Softball residency rule & Donna Bertulis le city of McHenry has again changed its residency requirements regarding organized adult softball leagues, making it more difficult for out- of-town residents to play on city ballfields. The number of participants in the program, which increases annually, has forced the city council's parks and recreation committee to review and change its policies. Effective this coming season, all leagues, including those not sponsored by the city, but using the city's fields must follow these guidelines: -The iirst two weeks of registration will be open to all adult softball teams which include at least 80 percent residents of the city of McHenry. -The second two weeks, teams comprising of at least 60 administration fees and may register. These teams will be charged a 175 fee, in addition to the regular league fees. fees are $240, which 14 games, plus playoff That money is used by park department to pay for umpires and other of which do not qualify for either category may register following the initial four weeks. Elizabeth Nolan, chairman of the park committee, said the new rules were "set up as equitably as possible", but "to serve first am) foremost our own community." Director of Parks and Recreation Pete Merkel said last season's rosters included the names of at least 56 percent non-McHenry residents. In one men's 12-inch league alone, 68 percent of the ballplayers were non-residents. In a similar matter, the city council also voted to cease all league play on Sundays during the season. Merkel explained that, again due to the huge number of >ants, scheduling has unreasonably difficult. He explained that the park department did not have a normal maintenance schedule on Sundays, preventing them from keeping the fields well- tiose days. It is also icult to schedule qualified umpires to staff Sunday games, he added. Three seniors that played on the Johnsburg Skyhawk volleyball team were named to the Northwest Suburban All- conference team. Theresa Hauck and Michele Swartzloff were both unanimous selections. Julie Anderson was also named. Marian Central had two players named to the squad. Kim Schuler was an unanimious pick. Beth Penza was the second player chosen. Gray slake and Wauconda were two other teams with three players named. Grayslake had Heather Dunbar and Sherryl Nvgaard unanimous selections, while Val Utter also named. Pam Nupl, Donna Miller and Sandra Saurmal of Wauconda were all unanimous selections. Others named were; Lisa Tylkowski of Grant, Anne Scherberth of Lake Zurich, Sally Gambacorta of Lake Zurich and Aydie Farris of Marengo. Hauck was a four-year starter for the Hurricanes, and this is the second straight season as an all-inference player. She was an honorable mention the year before. Hauck was a team leader in passing at 98 percent, spiking 90 percent, hits 91 percent and serving 96 percent. "Theresa was the most consistent player," said Johnsburg coach Sharal Koenigseder. "She never was subbed out of a game this season. She added the most and leadership." /artzloff was named for the conference honor for the first time. She was credited for 81 percent passing, 83 percent serving, 79 percent spiking and 95 percent Bps. Anderson shared co-captain duties with Hauck. It was also Anderson's first time on the all- conference list. When you look at Jim Bentz, you think of a rugged fullback who loves to run over defensive players. But the 5-foot-9 206 d seniors says he isn't that of runner. __ ntz has started in the fullback position on the varsity squad the past two years. With one game left, Bentz has already almost doubled his yardage from last year. This season he has gained 998 yards. 428 yards over last season's total. Last Saturday, Bentz rushed for 111 yards on 18 carries in a .21-20 win over Round Lake. "I would never run straight at a defensive lineman if I didn't have too," said Bentz. "I like to do a lot of things. I like to twist and do jab steps." Bentz credits his . success, along with the entire team's success, to the off-season weight program. The increase in the offensive line strength is the biggest key to his success. "strong lineman and a strong halfback has made the dif ference," Bentz said. "It's a total team effort. We have a solid, tough offensive line this year. The offensive line has better speed and better Bentz says his strength has also increased significantly. He is one of the strongest players on the team. Along with the strength, came more chances to carry the ball. "I have carried the ball a lot more. This season I have carried the ball 150 times, and last year I only carried the ball 100 times." w . • Jim Bentz ATHLETE of the week The biggest difference for Bentz this season from last year, is the Skyhawks are winning. "We went from 1-8 to 7-1 in only one year. I don't think everyone has caught on to that. That's a big thing right there.'* Bentz says he does plan to play college football. He hasn't picked a college yet, but has applied for admission at Western Illinois University. Bentz is the son of Mrs. Janet Bentz. BIG WEEKEND FOR SIX COUNTY TEAMS continued from page 24' victories after losing its opening twogames. "We lost to Johnsburg and Marengo by one point each in our first two games, but we beat Huntley on our homecoming, and thai once we beat Harvard, that was the key. They started to believe in themselves," Hofman said. "I'm pleased to death with the effort the players have shown. They've really started to gel as a team. I'm real happy with the season." * • Hampshire, with a victory over R-B, is not an automatic shoo-in for the playoffs, however. The Whip-Purs must win by 12 points or more to qualify. If they win by 11 points or less, Burlington Central will 00 the rdayoffs. "At the beginning of the season, no one expected us to do anything," Hofman said. "It's really been a special season for me because I've improved as a coach. Last year, we were programmed to win the state championship and If stuctwkti: one or two things, but this year I've had to alter some things. Who's to say we won't win the thing (conference title) again" Marian Central will try for its first undefeated season in its history over a Lake Zurich team that MC Coach Don Penza is in a no-lose situation. u "They can approach this game the same way Grayslake aid," he said. "They can come at us widte open with little to, lose. I'm sure they1U give us all they've got." The Hurricanes will be playing without the services of junior fullback-defensive end Andy Hartlieb, who suffered a shoulder injury in last Friday's game againt Grayslake. Harltieb, may be ready in time for the IHSA playoffs scheduled to begin Wednesday. beginning of said. "13on't really and if we have we with succesful teams is that they become complacent, tend to rest on their laurels and fail to im prove. Penza said the irony of this season is that he sees im provement daily. "At practice, myself and coach (Mike Garvey) sat back and let the players run the show and we could see the maturity of some of the players from the the season," he think we've just started this week. "They are really getting to know each other and knowing hgW'to-Wock," he continued. "We throw everything at them in practice. We blitz ail ll men on defense just to see how the offense will react. They're all putting forth a lot of effort." Penza said the injure to Hartlieb hopefully would not affect the performance of his team due to its depth. "We know the kids who fill in for Andy will' do an adequate job. We have the confidence that when one kid goes out that we don't lessen the effectiveness of the team putting another kid in.' by mm mm A CLEAN DEAL FROM SUPER^ CLEEN ̂ - CAR WASH •CAR WASH & WAX......
