1'agr 20 - PLAINDKALER HER AI.I). WEDNESDAY , DECEMBER 26. 1984 Frigid weather brings sample of winter FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 27, 1934) The first real sample of winter hit McHenry Christmas night with temperatures dropping to 10 degrees to 15 degrees below zero. The frigid weather was ushered in with a light snowfall and winds from the north giving the vicinity part of a cold wave that extended over the Dakotas, the upper Mississippi valley and the western portion of the Great I,akes region. wice Twenty-one McHenry high school graduates met last night at the Bridge for the second annual reunion banquet of the ('lass of '31; Even the zero temperature did not stop the ex- students. One boy drove from his farm home five miles west of town. He reported that after he had induced a stiff motor to start, he still doubted whether or not he would arrive from the way his car skidded inch by inch up the slippery hills. A committee was appointed to plan an all-alumni reunion. Members include Dorothy Fisher, chairman, and Walter Brefeld, Alma Justen, Alvera Antholz, and Kenneth N. Boley. Among advertisers extending season's greetings were Riverside Bake Shop, the-Royal Blue Store (John Fisher, proprietor), National Tea Store (A.W. Krug, Mgr.), The A & P Store (A.G. Matthews,\ Mrg.) Alexander Lumber Co., Art Smith Groceries and Meats, R.I. Overton Motor Sales, H.C. Kamholz Hardware, and Sin clair Super Service Station (Mrs. John R. Knox, Prop.). FORXY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 28, 1944) There was many a panic- stricken housewife in McHenry and throughout the nation on Christmas Day as news releases told of sharp rises in the point values of much canned goods, meat and butter. The Office of Price Administration restored point values to asparagus, green and wax beans, corn, spinach and peas. Butter point values are increased to 24 points per pound. Sugar stamps No. 30, 31, 32 and 33 are void. All out standing home canning sugar certificates are void. Other changes hit housewives hard because they had been saving stamps to purchase needed quantities of goods. With the changes and voids, housewives will likely spend whenever stamps ace issued. The OPA indicated ^that,. tb6 changes would ensure equal distribution to all consumers. Some housewives do not agree. The Purple Heart has been awarded posthumously to Maurice C. Zena for military merit and for wounds received in action which resulted in his death. It will be recalled that Maurice made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Frisby, Sr., in McHenry for about two years previous to entering service. Old Man Winter has come upon us ahead of schedule this year of 1944 and either a biting cold or a blizzard seems to greet one each day upon arising. A common sight around the city is of motorists pushing their cars from the curbs and slipping across intersections. Motorists on country roads in Northern Illinois are hastening the dilapidation of their pre war cars as they pull them out of ditches. An advertisement wishing the residents a Happy New Year was run by the McHenry City Council; Mayor R.I. Overton, Clerk Earl R. Walsh, and Aldermen Alfred Tonyan, Joseph M. Regner, Edward J. Buss, A.E. Nye, George P. Freund and Fred Ferwerda "and all city employees." TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 24, 1974) A young McHenry mother was killed and her three-year-old daughter was critically injured in the crash of two cars on Dec. 23. The dead woman was Lin- daree G. Roepenack, 23. Her daughter, Jennifer, was taken to McHenry Hospital by the Johnsburg Resuce Squad and later transferred to Evanston hospital for treatment of head injuries. The hood of the vehicle stricking the Roepenack car flew up and obscured the view of the driver, causing the accident. The 6,000 th baby born at McHenry hospital since 1961 when the maternity wing was added to the hospital is John Tonyan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Tonyan of Antioch. He went home in his own giant-sized Christmas stocking in the arms of his mother, Barbara. By Angela Burden Plalndealer Herald news service At least one full day - Jan. 22, 1985 - and as many days as needed thereafter have been set aside for the hearing on McHenry County Landfill Inc.'s controversial landfill ap plication. Tom Huemann, chairman of the McHenry County Board's Regional Pollution Control Facility Hearing Committee, has set Tuesday, Jan. 22, as the hearing date for the application. The hearing will be held in Building D at the McHenry County Fairgrounds. It will commence at 9 a.m. and con tinue until 5 p.m. The fairgrounds are located at the intersection of Illinois 47 and Country Club Road, Woodstock. According to Huemann, if additional days are needed, the hearing will continue on Jan. 23 and proceed every business day, Monday through Friday, until testimony is complete. The landfill application was filed Nov. 27 for a site at the 113- acre Conley farm on the east side of Illinois 47, about 1.5 miles north of Huntley. Written objections concerning the landfill application must be. Village Hall. jived in the McHenry County lerk's office within 30 days after the filing, according to the law. Hie written objections or comments submitted within the required period will be admitted as evidence in the hearing conducted by the board's pollution control committee. w On Tuesday, the board hired the firm of Graef, Anhalt, Schloemer and Associates of Milwaukee, Wis., as consultants for the pending landfill ap plication process. The firm was the consultant for the McHenry County Waste Study Advisory Committee. An association of concerned citizens was recently formed by Huntley area residents. The Landfill Emergency Action Committee, chaired by Vernon Brunchon, is urging county residents to submit their written comments to the county clerk's office at McHenry County Courthouse, 2200 N. Seminary Avenue, Woodstock, 111., 60098, prior to the Dec. 27 deadline. "We must inundate the county clerk's office with our ob jections, or we will have a landfill which will pollute our water supply, increase traffic on Route 47, create tons of blowing debris and lower the property values of surrounding farms and homes," according to the LEAC.
