Eddie Murphy has left Nick Nolle behind and has become a Detroit detec tive. He's still street wise and smooth, and doesn't let little things like rules or civil rights get in his way Woe to the bad man: Eddie Murphy is bad. ' A friend of Murphy's is killed, and the clues point to Los Angelas, so Murphy takes a cue from those hillbillies who discovered oil and heads lor the hills. Beverly that is. Palm trees, swimming pools, fancy cars As a cop from the inner city, and an out-of-towner. Murphy gels to poke lun at the folly that is Beverly Hills. He Jtpeps his record intact by solving his cast; in 48 hours, even if he does drive nearly everyone insane in the process. "Beverly Hills Cop" is crowd-pleasing, escapist fun, and a sure-fire box-office hit. Murphy gets to defy the rules, defeat the villain and be pro claimed the hero, always per forming with a dancer's style and an impish smile. The action is fast and streamlined, the tone is bubbly and jocular: Never have so many |okes been made by S.W.A.T. teams in the face of machine guns. Never fear. Murphy comes out with only a scratch, more an unofficial badge for bravery than a battle wound. This is the stuff Hollywood gets criti cized for producing, mindless fluff, a simplistic adolescent level adventure French film critics wil' deplore it. and then a few years later go out and Duy one of the film's posters to hang in t^eir office.
