It's easy to see why. "Cone With the Wind," the 1939 MCM film based on Margaret'Mitchell's epic novel, tells the sweeping tale of a nation caught in the midst of the CMI War. "CWTW" boasts sex, romance, violence, humor, life and death. It is, in essence, a soap opera excursion: nearly four hours of ambition, greed, frustration and revenge. The Carr- ingtons never had H like this. Vivien Leigh won her first Oscar for her role as the ambitious vixen Scarlett O'Hara. The search for the right actress to play Scarlett took the film's producers years -- Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davis were test ed -- but the choice to cast the then-unknown Miss Leigh proved perfect. Miss Leigh infuses her role with valentines and vitriol, making Scarlett the survivor she was so scared to become. Whether making a gown out of drapes at Tara or standing on that hill as she swore she'd never go hungry again, Scarlett proved that even in the 1969s, women were made of stronger stuff, frankly, my dear, Scarlett did give a damn. The rest of the film's cast was superb: Clark Cable as Rhett Butler, Olivia de Havilltnd, Leslie Howard, Butterfly McQueen and Hattie McDaniri. Question: What did Scarlett clutch as she swore "I'll never go hungry again t" John Reith •f f t ipej y :J»MSUY BBC founder remembered /• By Amanda Bruce It takes a strong man to run an empire, and John Reith, who founded and nurtured the British Broadcasting Co.. was such a man. "Reith." on The Arts & Entertainment Network Dec. 30 and 31. tells the story of the BBC's general manager, beginning in 1922 when he walked into the company's sparse two- room office. Reith backed Down from no man, including Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Others might have considered his ways more bullying than" forceful, including his chief engineer, who was dis missed when he divorced his wife. Morality was paramount to Reith. The story, which feels more like a drama than a documentary, is told with flashbacks to Reith's World War I soldier days. He's an interesting man handling an impressive job, but the story is too long for even him. Nearly three hours of "Reith" can test the patience of even a BBC enthusiast. On the lighter side. New Year's Eve is a good night for comedy when HBO repeats four specials by stand-up comics. "Carlin at Carnegie" is an hour of George Carlin perforr.iirg at legendary Carnegie Hall. He fills the hallowed hall with some great one- liners and a lot of obsceni ty. "Billy Cr/«tal -- A Comic's Lne" is more uncerstateo. with Crystal's humor finding its niche in many sketches, some of which are quite elaborate. In '"Robert Klein: Child of the '50s -- Man of the '80s,"' the stand-up comic's best lines con cern his new fatherhood. And in "The Joe Piscopo Special," the comic jumps from sketches to impres sions. Series comedy is in high gear on New Year's Eve, too. The year 1984 is recalled through zany glimpses in "Not Neces sarily the Year in Review," an extra edition of HBO's successful comedy series. And on Cinemax, there are episodes of "The Richard Belzer Show" and "SCTV." What better way to bring in the new year than with a smile?
