N r««r 4 PLAINDEALFRHER4LD. IID>ESDAV.JA.MARV9.19«5 Winter brings memories of theiobsled "What is a bobsled?" v That is a question being tossed at me by young people too young to remember. <\ A bobsled is a wagon box placed over two sets of heavy runners. It is pulled by two horses. Sometimes jingle bells were attached to the harnesses. The man with the card idea the biggest says too many people keep his name on their list and wait to see if he is sending one to them. - It would be great if ders could furnish a1 of you icture So I Hear Walsh Maybe the man has something there. However. I love to open those cards. There is a big problem in our back forty. Most 'of the birds and some of the squirrels have left us. There must be a reason. Those feathered and furry friends have been welcomed with plenty of food. Do any of you bird lovers have any idea what we have done to deserve such desertion? ^ A certain chill comes over me when I see a hatless bald-headed man out in this zero weather. Vince Li will be Ceremonies capably han River) mi of one of those sleds, perferably with horses hitched and ready for action. Bud Thennes is one who remembers the bobsleds. He and his father, Philip, remember hitching up the team and driving from their farm to St. Peters Church in Volo. Ttte distance was two and one half miles and the temperature was below zero. How many would do that today? , We know a man who has an idea to clear up the question of sending Christmas cards. The man is looking for a card that reads: '"Hiis is the last card I will be sending you. Merry Christmas." <? _... The. thought is that people would like to break the number of cards sent each vear. The weatherman really did a snow job on us in welcoming in the New Year. Somebody is always doing something nice for me. Mrs. James (Patty) Viekery gave us some sharp pictures taken at the * McHenry County Sports Day last September at the County Historical Society in J^nion. Fatty took her parents, the "Mac" McCrackens, to the big event promoted by Nancy Fike. It was a big day for "Mac" as he met old friends made during* | his many years in McHenry High athletics. n It was a big day for all of us, especially Dick Rabbitt and Toney Roskie. They knew everybody and everybody knew them. Toney can share the "Peoples Choice" title with Dick. Now, here it comes! A very-nice letter arrived from Harry May, Ticket Chairman, inviting me to the ninth annual Johnsburg Old- timers Dinner. A disability kept me fror attending last year. Everybody^ told me it was the best. Now, Harry gives me the impression that this year will be Illness will keep the one and only Jerry Wakitsch from leading the way this year, but his son Rick will do a great job in making arrangements. • From the world of baseball will come Keith Moreland, Jerry Hairston, Jack Perconte and Minnie Minoso. Look for a couple of surprises to round out the list. Monday, January 21 has been designated as the date of this ever-popular dinner. It would take a team of horses to pull me away from attending the dinner and fun this year. Time marches on and changes keep coming along in Ye Olde Plaindealer-Herald office. Mary Miller, after 28 years, hung up her bookkeeping tools last Friday as a large group of employees and former em ployees gathered for a feast. Appreciation covering the past and good wishes for the future marked the day. Our thought is that Mary can be replaced, but nobody can take her place. I looked over the crowd at Maty's party and decided they look younger every year. v Every mail brings requests for donations to one' worthy cause or another. If we gave all of them what they want, we would have to go for food stamps.
