Snow tubing •FIFTY YEARS AGO Taken from the files of Jan. 10, „ 1935) A court case started in Sept., 1929 against the stockholders of the Citizens Bank of McHenry was decided by Judge E D. Shurtleff in Circuit Court Monday, in favor of the complainants. The case was brought by air of the depositors and creditors of the bank against all of the stockholders. The total amount sued for was $122,000. Cupid had a good year in McHenry County in 1934 with is­ suance of 635 marriage licenses. June, as usual, was the banner month with 100 licenses being issued. Hard water toilet soap sold for 22 cents for five bars and finest creamery butter sold for 34 cents per pound at Erickson's Dept. Store. -- . . - Justen's Hotel advertised an Old Time Fiddlers' Contest for Jan. 12 with judges coming from out-of- town. Chicken dinnej; was also of­ fered for 25 cents. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 11, 1945) Pvt. Donald J. Schaefer, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Schaefer, Main St., West McHenry is an aircraft mechanic with a B-24 Liberator heavy bombardment group which was recently awarded a war department unit citation in Italy. Hoogasian is honored Outgoing Chief Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit Jack Hoogasian was recently honored by the Court Services Department of Lake County at a Christmas celebration inWaukegan. Judge Hoogasian was presented with an engraved clock-plaque as a reminder to him of the time he spent during the past two years overseeing the efforts the Court Services personnel. . In presenting the award Direc­ tor of Court Services George Gallaugher, cited Hoogasian for support of Court Services and its programs during the past two years. One of Judge Hoogasian's duties was to organize the old juvenile, adult, and detention departments into a modern Court Services Department. The citation was awarded for the highly successful strategic bomb­ ing of the Bratislava Oil Refinery in Czechoslovakia in June, 1944. Evening classes for farmers will start next week. A machinery repair course, conducted by George P. Freund, will begin at the Case Implement Shop on Jan. 17. Other courses, mostly on soils, will be offered at area schools. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 7, 1960) A kick-off meeting for workers in the campaign for the new Johnsburg rescue squad building fund was held last week, with a high note of enthusiasm shown among those who will be soliciting money to erect the new building. The $7,500 building will be located on Bridge View drive in Johnsburg. Members of the squad, as well as many generous people working in the building trades have volunteered to do most of the labor connected with the project. Postmaster J.W. Hettermann has announced receipt of an award stating that McHenry city post office drivers have earned the 1959 post office regional opera­ tions director's award for safety. The McHenry Choral Club will begin rehearsals for the spring season Jan. 11. The theme for the spring program is "One World in Song." Four McHenry County and local area '"Extensibn advisers recently attended a week-long conference designed for in- » service education and professional exchange ^n the Univej^yLQl Illinois campus in Champaign-Urbana. "Internal Strength for Ex­ ternal Excellence" was the theme of the conference. The U of I Cooperative Ex­ tension Service currently in­ cludes a professional staff of 359 county advisers. 185 campus- based faculty members and administrators and 20 area > advisers housed in regional .offices throughout the state. The staff conducts educational work statewide through 103 county offices in four program areas: agriculture and natural resources, home economics and family development, com­ munity resource developments and 4-H and youth. Local Extension staff . members participating in the conference were Kathy Halstead, Brian Sager, Bruce Spangenberg, and Mary Widolff. • The local county Extension office is located at 789 McHenry Ave., Woodstock. A Personal Wellness and Fitness pay was a major new addition to the annual con­ ference Extension staff.
