But the Scots found it wasn't quite as easy the second time around. After blowing an eight-point , lead midway through the second half, the Scots regrouped in the final three minutes to pull off a 65-61 Skyway Conference win Tuesday night. MCC is 1-0 in conference play and 4-2 overall. The winners held a 51-43 lead with 11:10 to play on Michelle Zimmerman's three-point play, but the Lancers scored 11 of the next 13 points to take their only lead of the game - 55-53 - with 4:30 left. But baskets by Zim merman, Kecia Knudsen and Diane Pilgard iced the win for = MCC. "It took us until the last minutes of the game to get going. I almost had to shame our players into playing defense. We set a goal to allow Lake County a maximum of one shot per-trip downcourt," MCC Coach Bob Edwards said. "When they had us, we regained the killer punch and we went and got them." The Scots, as they have in each of their three wins so far this season, jumped out early as Pilgard pumped in eight quick points to spur MCC to a 20-8 lead. Lake County rallied to tie the score at 23, and a key four-point play helped MCC take a 34-28 halftime lead. Pilgard paced MCC with 24 points, while Zimmerman added 17, including 13 in the second half and Sue Hoppmann, despite playing with the flu, chipped in 13. The Scots stormed to a 20- point first-half lead and mat ched the College of Lake County point-for-point in the second half to post a 92-74 win in their Skyway Conference opener. MCC employed an awesome fast break, triggered by Derrick Bruce, Lee Newman and Scott Russelberg as MCC improved to 7-6 overall. "That was one fine half of basketball, we played extremely well - hey, we scored 48 points and had only five turnovers," MCC Coach Mike Capaccio said. "We did a good job on the boards and I'm real happy." Darrell Loudenbeck enjoyed his finest night as a Scot as he tallied 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. "Yes, a very nice ball game for Darrell. If we can get 10 to 12 points and eight to 10 rebounds out of him every game, we'll win a lot of games," Capaccio said. sLoudenbeck, a 6-3 forward from Marengo, scored six of MCC's first eight points. He tallied the first hoop on a rebound and the second basket on a short jumper. After Newman's 15-footer gave MCC a 6-2 lead, Loudenbeck came back with another layup off a fine pass from Bruce to give the Scots an 8-4 lead. And then the fast break took over. "It was just like the three-man weave and the fast break drill we run in practice - that's why we run them," Capaccio said of his team's ability to break. "They did everthing right - the rebound, the outlet pass and the break itself." Jamie Eriksen led MCC's balanced attack with 18 points Johnsburggirls adapt, lash Grant JOHNSBURG - The Lady Skyhawks of Coach Nancy Fahey wasted no time in get ting back into the (lost-holiday swing of things, claiming a 62- 41 Northwest Suburban Con ference victory over Grant Tuesday night. The win lifts Johnsburg's overall record to 4-3, 1-2 in the NWSC. "We p layed a good ballgame," Fahey said of her Skyhawks, who hadn't played since a loss to Wauconda Dec. 20. "There were a lot of fouls, and that slowed the game down a little, but we pressed well, and played good, transition basketball." Junior Laura Oeffling again led the way for the Skyhawks, scoring 28 points to pace all scorers. Oeffling also added eight rebounds to the Skyhawk cause. Vicki DuBeau had seven. FAHEY said she toyed with her lineup a little bit against the Bulldogs, and that may have resulted in Oeffling's big numbers. "We put Laura in the post," Fahey explained, "and we moved Cris May to shooting guard. Laura got a lot of points on rebounds and off the break, getting a second shot and put ting it right back up. "Cris didn't score," Fahey continued, "but it's a new posi tion for her. Patti Butler, who's only a junior, played the point and did an excellent job. I'm not sure we're going to make the switch permanently, but it's nice to know you have the flexibility if you need it. This was a good game to try it." THE SKYHAWKS shot percent from the field, and 68v percent from the line. "We've been shooting about 20-25 percent (from the field)," Fahey said, "so that's a real improvement. We shot a lot over the break." Fahey said it's beneficial to have games scheduled during the holiday season, to "keep the motivation up," but said her squad had outstanding practice sessions instead. * "We really practiced well. We worked a lot on our shooting, which had been bad, and the girls were real en thusiastic during practices. It was good for us," said Fahey. JUNIOR Bev Hiller chipped in 10 points to the Skyhawk cause, while Butler had eight and DuBeau seven. i Johnsburg began play in its own tournament Thursday night against Alden-Hebron. The round-robin event wijl con tinue Saturday, when the Skyhawks play South Beloit at 1 p.m., and Richmond-Burton at 7:30 p.m. "We've-Voit* it the last two years, and wfe'd definitely like to win it again," admitted Fahey. "It's one of our goals." McHENRY (Continued from page 19) "I don't know where they were mentally," he said. "Going into the game with only one substitute may have bothered them. But once they got going a little bit, they were OK." Wirtz said he was most pleased by the Lady Warriors' free throw shooting, which was an even 60 percent. McHenry shot 32 percent from the floor, also an improved number. Chilvers and Kim Busche led McHenry with 12 points each. Liz Celske paced all scorers with 22 points on 11 baskets. "SHE'S A good shooter," Wirtz said of the Cary-Grove star. "All her shots were 12-18 feet. She's got a nice shot." Wirtz also praised the play of Busche. "Kim played a real nice game. She was really hustling." McHenry hosted Jacobs Thurs day, and will return to action next when Woodstock come Thursday, to to wn. T^e M< McHenry sophomores blasted Cary-Grove 42-22. Bruce chipped in 15, Newman had 14 points to go along with six rebounds and 10 assists while Dawson added 13 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. "Lee is really starting to play like I know he can," Capaccio said. "What you've got to remember is that he didn't play, much last year because of an injury (his foot), so he's really still in his freshman year playing-wise even though he's a sophomore." MCC held a 48-24 halftime lead and never allowed the margin to get less than 17 points in the final 20 minutes. Dawson, who was relatively quiet in the opening half, came alive after in termission to score 11 points. Loudenbeck's rebound layup off a missed free throw ingited an il-point MCC spurt that saw a 71-56 lead blossom into an 82-56 advantage. He scored six points in that surge and MCC never looked back. The Scots, now 8-6 overall and 1-0 in Skyway play, returned to action Thursday by hosting Wright College in a conference battle at 7 p.m. KEEPING SCORE FOX VALLEY CONFERENCE Boys' Basketball Standings Conf All WL WL 0 Woodstock .......4 0 9 5 CL Central 4 19 5 Dundee-Crown 2 29 6 Jacobs 2 2 7 7 CL South 2 3 311 McHENRY 1 3 510 Cary-Grove ,.0 4 112 NW SUBURBAN Boys' Basketball Standings Conf.
