FRIDAY JANUARY li, 19S5 Additional funding available pQgt for home energy assistance The Department of Commerce and Community Affairs has an nounced that an additional $10 million jtn Illinois Home Energy Assistance Program (IHEAP) funds is available to local ad ministering agencies. IHEAP, funded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, provides grants to income-eligible renters and home owners to help pay heating and medically necessary cooling costs, and to reconnect services lost. Locally administering the pro gram is the McHeifry County Housing Authority, P.O. Box 683, Woodstock, 111. 60098. Director is Ms. Nancy Briscoe. The telephone number is (815) 338-7752. "This year, Illinois received $123.6 million for IHEAP, which is about $15 million more than originally expected due to a change in the national allocation formula. Therefore, we were able to allot more money to the direct client assistance and emergency services components of the pro gram," said DCCA Director Michael T.Woelffer. Of the additional allocation to local agencies, $9.2 million will go for direct client assistance and (700,000 for emergency utility reconnection services. Previously this year, nearly $45 million had been set aside for the 36 local ad ministering agencies across the state. "This additional funding will help more needy families in Il linois pay for their energy costs -- the exact reason the program is in existence," said Woelffer. Eligibility is based on the number of family members and their combined annual income. Any persons who believe their households may be eligible should contact the McHenry County agency. ps fur providing relief for families FIFTY (Taken from to 1935) The cost of proyj 510 families on * McHenry County month of October compared to ?13, families the previous The figure wa» a ' cent less thin in " average cost of on the rolls in ~ relief for f rolls in during the 112,571 for Of 4.7 4.7 per- §r. "The National Arbor Day "Foundation considers teaching children about the value of trees to be a very important priority," John Rosenow, the foundation's' executive director, said.' "To meet this need, the foundation has produced a special in structional unit called 'Grow Your Own Tree.' " \ "The 'Grow Your Own Tree' unit includes two full-color filmstrips, audio cassettes,, a teacher's guide, wall posters, student activity materials, and student awards for participating children," Rosenow said. "It is organized as an easy-to-use, week-long unit for grade schools." "A special feature of the unit will be individual student kits containing everything children need to grow trees from seeds, i The kits include seeds, planting * instructions, a planting con tainer, and a growing medium. : The students just add water," jcheck the I listings in our j classified 1 section.
