RTE. 120 Johnsburg Businessmen win battle of unbeatens) 71-55 Wednesday night hockey, er, basketball at Parkland Jr. High, included three games reminding many of the sport which takes place on the ice rink with skates and sticks. In the evening's first 'face-off,' two undefeated teams collided, with the Johnsburg Businessmen winning the 'Stanley Cup' by a score of 71-55 over Christopher's Men's Wear. Don Bentz was the game's leading scorer, as the big center was hot from everywhere on the court. Bentz scored 13 points in the first half to help the Businessmen take a 33-26 lead. In the second half, Bentz added 15 more points, giving him 28 for the evening. Todd Green had double figures i n b o t h h a l v e s t o l e a d Christopher's with 25 tallies. Joe Meyers and Ray Thelen chipped in 11 points each for the winners, while Willie Howard had the same number for the losers. THE BUSINESSMEN had a 12- point lead midway through the first half but Christopher's storm ed back to within t$o wtthusix,u minutes to play. l0;lr'*- ' However, the Businessmen con trolled the contest the rest of the way. With Vk minutes left in the game, Christopher's trailed by eight, but it was the closest they would come, as the winners pulled away. Johnsburg remains undefeated (5-0) at the season's midway point. Christopher's in 4-1. State Farm Insurance pulled away from Henehan4& Mclntyre in the second half, and went on to claim a 52-40 victory. A tight, low-scoring first half, which ended with State Fam ahead 17-16, intensified into a no- holds barred, run-and-gun, go-for- broke contest. Greg Davis led State Farm with 21 points, while Paul Monsma had 16 and John Sytsma 12. Dean Bentley led Henehan with 14 points, while Bill Henehan had 12 before his ejection on a flagrant foul. THE PLAY of the game -- and perhaps the year -- was made by Sytsma, who picked up a loose puck, er, ball, took a couple of dribbles sandwiched between two opposing players. Losing his balance, Sytsma then literally ran over a third player, finally coming to a standstill after taking 64 steps without dribbling by running Into a fourth player and getting his |t>ell rung. He should have been wearing a face mask. Somehow, Sytsma delivered a long pass to a State Farm team mate for a layup. And, the most amazing fact: Not one whistle blew during the entire play. In other action, St. Regis Pub overcame a late Johnny Murphy- Gambler rally to win 55-53 in the evening's most exciting contest. Tom Les led Regis with 24 points and numerous assists, while Rob Mortell's jump shot with just three seconds left gave Regis its second victory in five tries. St. Regis led by as many as 14 points in the second half, however SPORT FANS... I BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW Brought to you by Phil Ooffling 13 ' w . k• If i u * \it. Here's a surprising football fact... Although several college football teams in history have scored more than 100 points in a game. NO pro team in the National Football League has EVER done it in any season...In fact, no NFL team has ever come close...The most points ever scored by one team in an NFL game were 73. by the Chicago Bears in a game in 1940, and ' oddly enough, in all the years since then, no NFL team has ever been able to top that. Herf's^an amazing statistic that shows how great Roger Staubach was as a quarterback...In his car eer with the Dallas Cowboys. Stau bach brought his team from be hind to win in the 4th quarter in 23 DIFFERENT GAMES, including 14 times in the last 2 minutes! What does the "O.J." sttand for in O.J. Brian Miller (18), Ben Himpleman (12) and Brett Decker (10) led the Murphy's- Gambler surge. WITH ONLY nine seconds to play, a bucket gave Murphy's its first lead of the game at 53-52. After a Regis timout, the ball came inbounds to a doubleteamed Les, who dribbled twice and fired to an open Mortell, who was sta tioned about 22 feet from the bucket. Mortell dribbled and let loose a jumper on the run, which went through. Murphy's called timeout with only two seconds left, but the losers were assessed a technical because their alloted timeouts had been used up. The technical free throw extended the victory margin to two points. MCHENRY (GOOD WITH COUPON ONLY) 3850140 "SUPER BOWL COUPON--•------ Buy One Whole "SUPER HAPPY SUB" Get One FREE SUPER BOWL SUNDAY!
