Trad* Fair Supplement -- Feb. 27,1985 -- Page 2 Thosfe funny little 'bucks' will buy you plenty! Sheriff's deputies assure safety, decorum The auxiliary deputies of the McHenry County Sheriff's Depart ment and the auxiliary police of the McHenry County Emergency and Disasters Agency play a vital part in the annual trade fair. It is with their assistance that the Trade Fair guests are able to find a parking place immediately and - or be directed to the free shuttle service. Sgt. Hodgson has the respon sibility of scheduling staff. "We cooperate with the local police and maintain radio communication with them while on duty." Volunteers not only serve without pay, but also must provide for their own uniforms and equip ment. The services of auxiliary volunteers is paid for by the Chamber, in the case of Trade Fair, or other sponsoring organizations of any event, but the monies do not go to the volunteers. The monies go into a fund that is used to replace the emergency equipment necessary for handling the major areas of their respon sibility. By utilizing the volunteers for community events, such as Trade Fair, their training is kept in top form because they are in constant communication to respond to ir regularities and what might be termed "mini-emegencies." The monies paid for the services are used to provide equipment such as flashlights, traffic vests, traffic control devices such as cones and horses, and the all-, terrain vehicle. The volunteers must pay for their uniforms, originally, however, any changes of uniform or necessary replacements are furnished. Stars and badges are funded through the ESDA monies. Auxiliary deputies dedicate 300 hours of training in emergency preparedness, which includes police work, communications, first aid, and fire arms. Addi tionally, they are required to par ticipate in qualifying shoots four times each year. Ammunition needed for the shoots is also fund ed through donations for their ser vices. In 1984, there are 44 shifts utiliz ed for Trade Fair, which represents a total of 235 man- hours. In the 1985 Trade Fair, 53 shifts ft ill be needed.
