APRIL 3.1985 - • ' ' • - • ' ' - " Opinion/Politics jApril Fools in Congress I WASHINGTON--One of the hazards endured by members of Congress is never knowing when their Junny bones might be twanged. t Rep. Danny Russo's risibles obviously were -plucked the other day when he received yet another phone call listing hypothetical conditions Hinder which a fellow lawgiver might seek a 'leadership post in just two years. i* Just in time for April Fool's Day, the Illinois .Congressman composed a "Dear Colleague" letter in which he called attention to all House •pemocrats, including himself but excluding 'Speaker Thomas O'Neill Jr., D-Mass., as potential ^candidates • A t l a s t c o u n t , t h e p a r t i s a n l i n e u p s t o o d a t 251 Democrats, 182 Republicans and two vacancies. $o Russo had a lot or franking to do. I don't know whether he appreciates someone else e explaining his jokes but I nevertheless point frit that a fruitbasket-turn-over situation was created by O'Neill's impending retirement. . Although "Tip," as he is widely known, actually Jtoesn't s step out until the end of the current two- ir session, there already is a scramble for dership positions up and down the line. , Thus far, most of the maneuvering has been of a provisional nature. Even so, Russo was amused. . His tongue-in-cheek letter to members of the Democratic Caucus, which makes such assign ments, didn't specifically mention that the 99th JCongress only was organized in January. • But, as he pointed out, ++it is never too soon lor thoughtful reflection on our leaders of the future." So saying, Russo brought to the attention of other caucus members "a carefully screened list of those individuals I believe exhibit the qualities, the commitment and dedication to our institution, our party and our natkrfrsq necessary for the success of ourselves, our future and our children." (Members of Congress tend to speak and write in a rather florid manner. Ergo, the above quotation is not terribly untypical)- Russo then proceeded to lik, by seniority, 58 possible O'Neill successors "who possess the aforementioned qualities." Similar claims were made for the other caucus members, also listed by seniority, for the posts of majority leader, majority whijPimiy&ucus chairman. But each list was preceded by an admission that the qualities of the designated Democrats were "not so high a quality as the qualities of Democrats on the higher lists." "Perhaps," he concluded, "you have already been contacted by s6me of the above mentioned candidates; perhaps you have been contacted by ALL of .the above mentioned candidates. "However, if after due deliberative, thoughtful, deep and pensive consideration, you should determine-without any outside influence, but in the privacy of your own room, chamber of abode- that none of the above exhibit qualifications of the aforementioned qualities, or ii any of the above mentioned members remove themselves from consideration because they believe that they fail to exhibit the qualifications of the aforementioned qualiti ANY C l tne qua es-VOTE FOR ME, MARTY RUSSO, FOR OF THE ABOVE. Public pulse Lashing out at drivers bear Editor: - ! I wish to bring to yours and the citizens of McHenry, and the county as well, something which I feel needs to be looked into immediately. ! When I moved into McHenry, {some years ago, it was because I thought that here was the ideal place to live. Clean, fresh and with a good city government as •well as a police department and ;fire department second to none in this area. I found people, for ttie most part, thoughtful and compassionate - until they got in the driver's seat of their cars. They then became the most ignorantly, stupidly hateful drivers I nave ever seen. They tailgate so close that if you had to stop, vou would have their fo engines (or a passenger. They buy a $10,000 car and drive it with one headlight. Drive bet ween McHenry and Fox Lake at 5:20 a.m. You will find at least three cars with one light and at least five with headlights out of adjustment. I have been passed every morning by at least four cars in a 35 mph speed zone, with no passing lines and signs. Also, ^driving through Whispering Oaks, I have been passed by a car doing at least 40 mph, which never even stopped at the stop signs. I am no paragon of perfection as a driver, but I will obey the laws and I will observe common courtesy as long as I have that driver's privelege. Also, I will not drive my car with one light or any other impediment. Being in the medical field, I can only say the nuts are not all in stitutionalized. You will find them in McHenry behind the wheel of a car. Lee A. Broncjy To me this is uncoi an£ also a violation laws. Jeannette M. Dear Editor: I for one would like to know why a minority group here in Wonder Lake is allowed to have the say-so as where the dues paid to the Master Association should be spent. In this instance, $6,000 was allotted for fireworks for the Fourth of July, 1965, which in cidentally was not on the March 10, 1985 agenda. Why wasn't every homeowner here in Wonder Lake given a chance to contact their sub division representative? We individual homeowners have to pay the MPOA dues. Why are we homeowners not allowed to have a say-so? * onal A measure to remove the Compensation Review Board's lawmaking ability and make it an advisoiy board has been introduced in the state House of iresentatives. sponsor of the bill, Rep. .Judy Koehler, R-Henry, believes the board can serve an advisory function.
