The students brought in pennies, nickels, dimes and an occasional dollar bill to raise money for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. The McHenry Rotary Club matched the amount raised. Like many American schoolchildren, Landmark's kindergarteners and first graders are helping to save the "Lady." The Lady is the Statue of Liberty and local students have been contributing their pennies, nickels and dimes to help restore her. Money, albeit in small a amounts, has been trickling in all year and en velopes addressed to "Miss Liberty, with love" have been brought t to the school. Handful after handful have been carefully carried to the school with explanations like, "I opened my bank and said, 'Well Miss Liberty, half for you and half for me.' " A recent trip to the bank showed that $79.63 in coin had been turned in. When the dollar bills were added, Landmark's Lady Liberty fund totaled $113.63. The McHenry Rotary Club agreed .to match any amount raised by the children. On Fridav, March 29, Rotary President Donald Gerstad came to Landmark to present a check. The combined contribution will be sent to the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foun dation to be used for the $230 million restoration project.
