Diana Ross. Lionel Richie, Tina Turner, Huey Lewis, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Hall and Oates, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson, Billy Joel. Paul Simon, Steve Perry and even Bob Dylan, it most likely will be a memorable clip. And indeed, USA for Africa's "We Are the World" is. It starts off with an animated shot of the earth that gives way to the autographs of the stars. The video builds with each voice sounding more pained than the last, until the tension is released when the group is assem­ bled as a whole in a what looks and sounds like a gos­ pel choir. The highlights of the clip are a set of visual duets. The first, with a tall Kenny Rogers and a tiny Paul Simon is at first fun/iy, but then it seems to tell us that when "we are the world" size doesn't matter. When Diana Ross and Michael Jackson sing together, it almost sounds and looks like a Pepsi commercial (and that a said, without ao v.*. .u ounce of disrespect). But the real joy is the Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen scene that seems to embody the pas­ sion that video and record are striving for. This video has to be compared to the Band Aid "Do They Know It's Christ­ mas" video by our brothers across the sea. "We Are the World" is technically a smoother video and it's better constructed to pull at our emotions But the Band Aid video was held together by immediacy. With cynics tgking potshots at this project, we have to remember that this video, in addition to raising money for this important cause, is ajso teaching some positive values to an MTV audience that often gets messages of another kind. TV NOTES On Sunday. April 7 MTV airs its British show, "The Tube." It's a good way to keep up with the new bands that often take a few months to catch on here. On Friday.
