RTE. 120McHENRY, ILL 4-H youth learn value of safe bicycling McHenry County 4-H joins the National Safety Council in commemorating National Bike Safety Week, April 21 to 27. Over 30 McHenry County young people are learning the basics of safe and enjoyable bicycle driving while also gaining an awareness of its beneficial health and recreational values through the 4-H bicycle project. According to McHenry County Extension Youth Adviser Kathy Halstead, the youths are becoming acquainted with the Illinois laws and local or dinances regarding bicycling. They are also ^earnin preventative maintenance am mechanical adjustments for safe bicycle operation. "The bicycle project teaches 4-H'ecs to become safe 'bicycle drivers' instead of 'bicycle riders,"7 Halstead said. The National Safety Council offers the following bicycle safety reminders: -Make sure your bike "fits" your body, when you are seated on your bike, you should be able to put one foot flat on the ground without leaning. -Keep your bike in shape. Check your bike periodically for wear and tear. Make sure the seat is tight, the tires are in-, flated properly, the wheels don't rub or wobble, the chain isn't damaged, the spokes aren't broken or bent, and the han dlebars are tight. --Make your bike safe. Equip £ our bike with a bell or horn, ont headlight and reflectors. -Review the rules of the road. -Riding double leads to trouble. Extra passengers make the bike hard to balance. A passenger riding in front of the driver can block the driver's vision. -If using your bike for play, stay away from traffic. Use your bike for racing, games and stunt driving only in a park, or empty parking If you' are a young person who's interested in learning about safe bicycle driving, 4-H has a lot to offer. You can join a 4-H club in your area and enroll in the 4-H bicycle project. ...for the finest in musical entertainment for your reception, party or any other occasion...
